Upgrades can increase the value of armors, weapons and rings. They also increase bonuses such as damage from PvE and crit chance.

Components
Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into weapons, armor, and trinkets to provide an additional stat boost or impact while they're being used. They can be obtained by crafting, purchasing from vendors trading, or looting. Some upgrades also have special cosmetic effects.
Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment that has a slot for them; the item must be at least upgraded to the blue level to allow a component to be applied. Upgrade components, unlike other mods can only be applied once. They are not able to be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and enrichments are a specific type of upgrade component used for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment, as well as some of the back items that are not ascending. Infusions and enrichments are recovered by salvaging ascended gear or completing an elite task in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

Most of the upgrades in the game can be replaced, however, Glyphs are only the one upgrade component that can be removed and replaced without restriction. Only legendary equipment can be salvaged and re-placed using the help of a Black Lion Salvage Kit.
The value of each Glyph is displayed when you select it from your inventory. You can replace it with another Glyph that is the same or higher rank to boost the value of the Glyph.
There are Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of the Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain gathering tools that are unlimited-use as well as through Faction Crypt raids. Every Faction Crypt has the possibility of dropping one of the various Glyphs, and there are some rare glyphs that can be obtained as drops from any of the four Faction Crypts.
Once you have obtained the desired Glyphs you'll need them to be placed on your equipment. Leveling

Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed yields a certain number of Technology points. These points can be used to level the item, and once enough points are earned, the upgrade will be claimed and its additional bonuses will be added to the item.
When the player upgrades an item it is replaced with a new item of the same kind. This means that the same armor piece will get a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item will also have its own set bonus. This could be a drawback since the item may become more expensive even if you don't require it.
If the player has enough tokens they can reroll item upgrades. This will cause the item to be exchanged for a brand new one, which will come with an initial level and a different set of bonus bonuses. This is a good idea, but should not be used frequently as it can waste resources.
Certain upgrades can boost their value, allowing players to customize their equipment.
