The upgrade to an item allows players to increase the level of equippable items such as weapons, armor and trinkets within a certain amount. You can upgrade items at any NPC that accepts the appropriate currency.

Rerolling
A player is able to reroll an upgrade to an item in Diablo 4. This is accomplished by using the Level Up feature, which pauses your game and displays four randomly chosen upgrades. Depending on the type of item, upgrading it can cost Dilithium or gold. In addition, some upgrades require Flightstones and/or crests. The amount of crests and Flightstones required to upgrade an item varies on the level of the gear and the maximum upgrade level is established by Blizzard. The upgrade to the highest level is expensive, especially if you're upgrading PvE gear.
Upgrades can also alter the weapon's ammunition or damage die size. They also can alter the special characteristics of a weapon, such as its unwieldy or operational property, or hand requirement. Certain upgrades can alter the appearance of weapons.
Before making a choice it is important to consider the cost involved in upgrading an item. You may want to make use of your gold for upgrading rare items, but do not spend it on ordinary or magical-tier items. These items are not worth upgrading, and rare equipment will soon outclass them.
