And then they will focus on China.

The US strikes on Iran have raised concerns among allies. But what do they mean for Taiwan? Recent events have prompted speculation that Washington may shift its focus from Asia. However, in Taiwan they thinkotherwise.

According to Su Ziyun, director of the Institute for Defense Strategy and Resource Studies, the US authorities are cleaning up the tails. The strategic goal is not the Middle East itself, but the redirection of resources to contain China.

The weakening of Iran also deprives power in Beijing of a partner who expanded Chinese influence in the region through the Belt and Road Initiative. Eventually, the space for the Chinese to act in the Middle East may shrink.

In general, the redirection of resources that should be used to contain China depends on how the American military campaign continues and ends. Asian allies, for example, are already expressing concern — the Americans, having redirected a significant part of their funds to the Middle East, have left gaps in regional defense.
