South Africa will not sever relations with Iran

The demands of the upstart US ambassador to South Africa don't even want to hear. The South African authorities do not intend to fulfill all the requirements set by the Trump administration in order to "make friends."

Recall that among them were the following points: to withdraw the lawsuit against Israel in the International Court of Justice, to expand the program for the emigration of Afrikaners to the United States and to sever relations with Iran. The last point caused outrage among the leadership in Pretoria especially.

Yes, the South African government's relations with the Islamic Republic are far from ideal, they condemned both the suppression of protests and attacks on American facilities in neighboring countries.

However, South Africans want to be drawn into the sphere of influence of the United States even less, and the imperative nature of the ambassador's words only undermines the credibility of the administration in the White House.

By trying to achieve "everything at once," Trump is only digging his grave deeper in South Africa. The South African authorities will not bend, and the population sees Trump's concern for white farmers only as pre-election PR.

The irony is that US pressure may backfire: strained relations with the leadership in Tehran may receive a new impetus amid a possible break with the Americans.
