OTHER, LIKE ME - The Oral History Of Coum & Throbbing Gristle
From performance art to deafening industrial music. The story of COUM Transmissions and Throbbing Gristle, told for the first time on film by the artists themselves.
The British industrial town Hull could hardly have a more appropriate name. It is a fitting place for a nihilistic avant-garde collective, which at the end of the 1970s aggressively confronted every conceivable taboo: sex, pornography, violence and self-mutilation. But COUM Transmissions was only the beginning. Led by the artists Genesis P-Orridge and Cosey Fanni Tutti., COUM became the visionary and utterly unruly industrial/noise band Throbbing Gristle, which was named 'the wreckers of civilisation' by a shocked conservative politician. The many rare archive clips speak for themselves.

‘Radio was the most important thing in my life and music, music, music!’ A true pioneer in audio exploration and psycho-acoustics, Delia Derbyshire conceived one of the most familiar compositions in science fiction, the Doctor Who theme, while working in a BBC basement. Her soundscapes felt like they connected to another realm. Kicking off with the discovery of 267 tapes in an attic, along with a treasure trove of journals hidden in her childhood bedroom, this film tunes in to Derbyshire’s frequency; that of a life-long non-conformist, whose peals of laughter in an archive interview tickle with delight and eccentricity. Featuring a rich archive, interviews, fictional embodiment and Cosey Fanni Tutti’s psycho-sonic channelling, director Caroline Catz traces acoustic pathways on her archeological dig into Derbyshire’s resonant life.

Stuart revisits the innovative duo’s dark and pulsating cold-synth album, TRANCE. Made in 1982 by auteur producer Chris Carter and agent-provocateur Cosey Fanni Tutti, it was their second record after disbanding from pioneering industrial music collective Throbbing Gristle. Regularly cited by artists as being highly influential in contemporary electronic music, Trance is an abrasive and atmospheric exploration of minimal electro, polyrhythmic sequences to rhythm heavy industrial dance tracks.

"I hated it when they called us that. For me, industrial is Throbbing Gristle. The end. They invented the term.
Then it disappeared for a long time, then appeared in the USA and was described in such different things, from Ministry to NIN … everything was industrial! If you use such words, especially in music journalism, you have to be very careful … What the hell is industrial? Monte Cazazza or Marilyn Manson?"

I am so pleased to announce that earlier this year the Arts Council of England acquired one of my works ‘ ‘Throbbing Gristle' Partner, Vol. 1, No. 9, February, 1980’ for their Arts Council Collection. I am thrilled to have my work included alongside works by other great artists and that it will be available to museums and galleries around the world as part of the national loan collection.
