Key theses

Theses calling for social responsibility:

  1. Restriction of access for new developers: Additional requirements for new developers who are just starting their activities on the platform may create barriers to entry. This could lead to a reduction in the diversity of content and ideas on the platform.
  2. Negative impact on indie and freelance developers: Individual developers working alone may face particular challenges in meeting new requirements. They may encounter increased difficulty in attracting the necessary number of testers and adhering to timelines.
  3. Social irresponsibility: During COVID-19 restrictions, developers urgently created applications to control social contacts and prevent the virus from spreading. How many people would have suffered if an additional 2 weeks of moderation were required?
There is an increasing number of military conflicts in the world. Developers and small companies are working on socially significant projects, such as air raid alerts. How many people will be affected if there is a 2-week delay in the release?
What about developers from poor regions where working with Android and Google Play is the only social lift? Introducing this rule will impact the demand for such developers.
  4. Churn to other platforms: The new rules raise the entry barrier to the platform higher than that of competitors. Why should an indie developer pay for 20 testers and wait for a 2-week moderation process? For the same resources and a shorter time frame, developers can release their applications on the App Store and undergo moderation within a day. Moreover, if there are issues with the applications, developers can receive quality feedback and clear guidance for implementation from App Store moderators. In contrast, Google provides no feedback during the same period.

Theses calling attention to potential financial losses for Google:

  1. Developer Exodus to other platforms: As a consequence, new products will prioritize launching on other platforms, such as Apple Store, Samsung Store, Xuawei Store, etc. Accordingly, Google may lose market share.
  2. Impact on Indie Developers: Many applications today have millions of installations started as indie developers or small companies. With the increase in the entry barrier, the likelihood of such "gems" emerging diminishes significantly.
  3. Reduction in AdMob's market share: As a consequence, the rise of competitors such as Unity Ads, Vungle, AppLovin, and others. Additionally, the emergence of lower-quality advertising networks that may not ensure user safety. This will also impact the company's advertising and in-app purchase revenue, leading to shareholder dissatisfaction.

Antitrust investigations are underway against Google. Let's focus on the new rules and highlight that Google seems unwilling to have indie developers on its platform. Under the guise of "caring" for users, Google starts pushing its own applications, undermines competitors, and prevents new ones from emerging.

Examples of Google's poor and irrelevant search results, where for some reason it attempts to promote its own applications or displays apps out of context, serve as an additional indication that its search is far from being of the highest quality. This underscores the lack of viable alternatives in the market.
