These 10 Streaming Services Offer Free Movies Online.
Allison Corinne
Streaming services have become more popular than ever before. They all have their own enticing libraries of movies and TV shows, but if you're not careful, you'll end up spending a fortune each month.
What if you could watch movies for free online? You certainly can! We know of a few sites where you can watch free movies online right now, from your computer or laptop, as well as from streaming devices such as a Roku or an Amazon Fire TV stick.
Check out the list below to see the top ten sites for free movie streaming. Make a note of your favorites so that nights at home can be just as exciting as going to the theater — while costing you nothing!
1. Kanopy
Kanopy is the best site for free movie streaming if you are a fan of artsy or classic films. Kanopy does its best to get high-quality and critically acclaimed films into people's living rooms, all for free, using Criterion Collection treasures as well as contemporary indie masterpieces.
Kanopy requires a connection to your local library, university, or college in order to be used. Tap or click here to learn how to check if your library is connected. You can access Kanopy's catalog at any time using a library card or your college email login.
One warning: Kanopy's movie offerings change on a regular basis, so if you really want to watch "Moonlight" or "Lady Bird," make sure you do so while they're still available. Movies return to Kanopy, but it's not always clear when, so keep that in mind when making your viewing choices.
2. Popcornflix
Popcornflix is the ideal free streaming site for those who prefer comedies, thrillers, and more mainstream movies ("popcorn flicks," if you will). It gives you access to a plethora of movies and TV shows in exchange for playing advertisements while you watch.
If ads irritate you, this may not be your favorite site, but you can't deny the selection is vast, covering a wide range of film eras as well as recent releases.
Popcornflix can be accessed through the web, but you can also watch it on your TV screen by downloading an app from Roku, Apple TV, Google Play, Amazon, or Xbox. We've previously recommended Popcornflix, and we continue to do so.
3. Vimeo
Vimeo, like YouTube, is a video platform that allows users to upload their own movies and clips to share in HD quality. Some movies on the site cost money to watch, but many are free especially short films.
Vimeo is available as a website as well as an iOS and Android app. You can watch movies on Vimeo by streaming them or downloading them to watch later when you don't have access to Wi-Fi, so it provides you with some excellent free viewing options.
4. Sony Crackle
Sony Crackle, formerly known as Crackle, is another excellent site for watching free modern movies and TV shows, but, like Popcornflix, it is ad-supported. We understand that advertisements can be very distracting, but that's the price you pay when you don't want to pay for the film.
If you enjoy action and thriller films, as well as older TV shows that are difficult to find on other platforms, Sony Crackle is well worth your time.
5. Vudu
Though primarily a platform for purchasing movies and TV episodes, Vudu also has many free feature-length movies and TV show episodes for you to watch — made possible, once again, by advertisements. Vudu is great at reporting how long movies will be free (the catalog changes monthly), and it has a ton of new releases as well as some beloved older dramas and comedies.
Vudu is available for use on computers, game consoles, streamed devices, smart TVs, Blu-ray players, phones, and tablets. To use the apps and website, you must first create a free Vudu account.
6. IMDB TV
IMDb TV, which works via IMDb.com or Amazon Fire goods, allows you to watch critically acclaimed films from the comfort of your own home. This, like most of these streaming sites, is ad-supported, but if you have Amazon Prime, you can watch movies without commercials on IMDb TV for free via Prime.
To watch movies, you'll need an IMDb or an Amazon account, and you can watch as much as you want. IMDb TV isn't the easiest to navigate or search through, but its Top-Rated category allows you to find movies that other users enjoy, giving you a better chance of enjoying whatever you choose from there.
7. hoopla
Libraries already provide a plethora of fantastic services; just tap or click here to see what we mean. However, your library card will also grant you access to Hoopla. It is the digital service of Midwest Tape, a corporation that provides libraries with media products and services such as DVDs, CDs, and audiobooks.
Simply sign up for hoopla with your email and library card to gain access to thousands of movies and TV seasons. Additionally, you will be able to use the hoopla app on your phone, tablet, Amazon Fire device, Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV, and Android TV devices.
It isn't compatible with every library system, so make sure to ask the next time you're there. If you do not have access, inquire about what your library will do to obtain it. After all, free, streamable movies are a fantastic offering, so you might help yourself and your fellow library patrons by encouraging signup.
8. The Roku Channel
If you have a Roku, you can watch free movies and TV shows on The Roku Channel. On the Roku channel, you can watch live shows as well as an ever-changing catalog of movies and TV shows for free.
You can add your premium subscriptions to the Roku Channel, allowing you to watch things like HBO and Showtime on your Roku all in one place. However, free content is available even without them, and similar options can be found on Popcornflix, FilmRise, Vidmark, American Classics, and YuYu.
The Roku Channel is worth adding to your device if you want to access all of these libraries in one place. But if you don’t have a Roku, you can watch many of its options at the other places listed above.
9. YouTube
YouTube has its fair share of feature-length films that have been uploaded illegally, and they tend to vanish quickly due to YouTube's algorithms. Users who attempt this are ridiculous, because YouTube offers many movies for free, in addition to those available for rent or purchase — you just have to be willing to watch advertisements with them. For a list of available films, tap or click here.
Another option is to go to the Movies & Shows channel, which can be accessed from the YouTube homepage, and click View All next to the Free to watch category. These free movies aren't the most critically acclaimed, but there are a few gems (especially comedies) and tons of kid-friendly content if you have small children to entertain.
Streaming has made watching movies much more enjoyable, especially when it is free. Fortunately, there are a plethora of free online movie streaming sites available, and all you have to do is sign up for a free account or watch a few advertisements along the way.
10. Internet Archive
Do you like watching old movies? Like the silent and black-and-white films of yesteryear, with their great stars? Many of these are now housed at the Internet Archive, a website that collects all media, including books and music, as well as films that have entered the public domain.
When content reaches a certain age, it is no longer subject to copyright laws, making it free to use and watch. That's how the Internet Archive can provide feature-length films for free, but it's also why so many are from the 1920s and 1930s. There is no better website for classic movie fans.
Enjoy the 10 websites we've mentioned above on your next movie night, and watch some movies you'll remember for the rest of your life for free!
