Hello fellow citizens of the internet ! Andrew here. Welcome to today’s edition of Internet Insider .
Today’s top stories include accusations on Reddit that a creator of a COVID tracker stole the idea , and Starbucks being called out for using fake union tweets on flyers. Plus, Claire’s weekly “ Dirty Delete ” column focuses on the social media transformation of Dr. Oz , who is running for Senate.
BIG TECH : Police have been relying on digital technology to find proof of suspects’ queerness to arrest, prosecute, and harass members of the LGBTQ+ community in countries like Egypt, Lebanon, and Tunisia, our Contributing Writer Viola Stefanello writes. But there are ways big tech can help the community . You can read Viola’s whole report here .
STOLEN? : The creator of a COVID-19 data tracker and Ukraine Take Shelter is being accused by people on Reddit of stealing the idea from a volunteer group. The creator told the Daily Dot that he denies the claims , but that hasn’t stopped Redditors from claiming that the creator copied a group’s work and profited from it .
FAKE : The Starbucks Workers United union is alleging that the company used fake tweets from the union account in anti-union pamphlets . The allegations come as a store in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania became the 19th store to unionize nationwide. Check out our full report here .
Dr. Mehmet Oz has taken a hard right turn since he was TV’s favorite doctor.
Most people met the affable Dr. Oz as a regular on The Oprah Winfrey Show , which he parlayed into his own show.
Now that he’s a candidate for the United States Senate in Pennsylvania , the former cardiothoracic surgeon is revealing the man behind the curtain. The turn from TV doc to Republican candidate has revealed the saltier side of Dr. Oz .
These days the man who was once “ honored ” to welcome Michelle Obama on his show is now tweeting things like “CHINA GAVE US COVID” and whining about “ big tech .” He’s declared a battle with our tech company overlords—never mind that he reportedly owns at least $10 million in big tech stock .
Oz may be the only Senate candidate on TikTok . Please enjoy this TikTok of him dancing to Sir-Mix-A-Lot’s “Jump On It.” You can also find him on Twitter , Facebook , YouTube , and Gettr .
His platform is like a paint by numbers kit for Republican pandering . Abortion bad, China bad, cancel culture is “destroying our country,” guns good, cops good, Trump (who recently endorsed him ) good, and frack, baby, frack .
People with memory spans longer than goldfish may be surprised to learn that the man who wrote articles expressing concern about the health effects of fracking has had a major change of heart since he filed to run for office in fracking country.
Oz’s turn from the guy giving us weight loss advice to the man pretending to live in Pennsylvania hasn’t been without some stumbles .
When his show was canceled due to his Senate run, Oz did what any megamillionaire would do: he unceremoniously fired people who’d worked for him for years.
The citizens of the internet don’t hesitate to remind Oz of his enormous wealth , either. He routinely gets ratioed every time he tweets a call for campaign donations.
Oz’s latest internet misstep came last week when he wandered around a grocery store complaining about inflation, which he naturally blamed on President Joe Biden .
What he probably imagined as a “gotcha!” moment had something of a boomerang effect, however. Twitter had a pretty hard time imagining a man worth more than $100 million doing his own grocery shopping .
“’I haven’t been to the grocery store myself in 15 years, but I’m going to today, and boy am I going to tuck my shirt into my pants,'” retorted one person online. “’I’m going to tuck them in good!'”
Now that he’s ( sort of ) abandoned his New Jersey and cable syndication abodes, Oz is learning that there’s no place like home .

Here are some key dispatches from across the ‘net.
A TikToker claims that she was charged with a felony after she went to the police station to retrieve her lost phone .
A creator posted a video explaining how job interviewers asked if she had social media accounts and why they were so difficult to find . Viewers found the questioning “ invasive .”
A hotel worker has gone viral for posting a video where he tells viewers why they shouldn’t wait until the last minute to check into their rooms.

Set across two time periods, No More Wings feels like a modern-day relic. It offers a swift look at life in the suburbs of London: the slang, the music, and Morley’s chicken shop take centre stage. And the story is simple. Two childhood friends, Isaac and Jude, meet at Morley’s to catch up on the years gone by, and clearly, they’re diverging in different paths. This short film explores the change in friendships and how the minor details of people’s personalities stay the same over time – and it shows flexibility in tone, combining light-heartedness with real relationship drama.
Adeyemi’s handling of what is potentially a dry subject is well controlled and entirely deliberate. No More Wings tells the story of two friends who have essentially outgrown each other but are still trying to keep the old magic alive. Treading back and forth in past and present, we see that Jude has stuck to his word of never leaving the ends. Isaac, however, has other ideas. He’s bought a house and is moving to East London. It’s this indifference that hangs over both characters as they dine on fried chicken. Through showing Jude as an unfilled talent who’s become stagnant in life, the film is able to explore the dynamics of the community, how the past has an irreversible link to the future, and the importance of moving forward, while staying true to your roots.
All of this is carried by strong performances and smart writing that feels sparse, and unhurried. While there’s nothing particularly exciting about No More Wings , Adeyemi managers to infuse a deeper sense of meaning while leaning into light banter between the two protagonists. It’s the comic angle of No More Wings that allows it to be far more easy-going than other films about growing up in London. However, it certainly feels like more could have been done to make No More Wings truly memorable. What it does do very well, though, is portray two characters, who are grounded in their city, and boldly tap into the mundanities of everyday life. No More Wings is a fine watch – a bit slow in some places, but it’s great to see a filmmaker building on their voice – and creating a profound narrative with a shoe-string budget.

Aircraft - Electric - Airplanes

Foamies (Scratchbuilt)

Question What would be the best way to reinforce foam wing

My team and I are building an RC electric airplane with high maneuverability for a competition.
We are building this airplane on a budget and we have been looking into foam material to save both cost and weight.

The RC airplane we are building would have a wingspan of 1.8 meters (approximately 6 feet) and should have a maximum weight of 4 kg (around 9 lb).

A quick calculation showed me that a foam wing would not bear the load. Therefore we think we need to reinforce the wing so it can withstand the load.
We came up with 2 options for reinforcing the wings.

a) Using carbon fiber rods and wood sticks placed inside the foam wing.
b) Laminating the foam wing with fiber glass fabric.

I have some questions about both methods and I would be happy if anyone experienced could help us with this matter.

1) When using carbon fiber rods or wooden sticks, how can we bond the material and the foam wing together? Is epoxy enough?
2) How can we ensure that the carbon fiber rods would not puncture through the foam wing and come out?
3) When laminating the foam wing with fiber glass, what are the benefits of vacuum bagging method compared to just using some epoxy and letting it dry without vacuum?
4) Between the options of using carbon fiber rods or laminating the wing with fiber glass fabric, which method should be preferred for a cost effective and lighter design?
5) Is using reinforced foam wings a realistic idea for an aircraft like the one we want to build?

Option c) ... Fiberglass strapping tape ...

Does anyone on the team have experience building foam planes ?

Does anyone on the team have experience flying RC planes ?

What type of high maneuverability are you talking about : speed ? stunts ? etc ?

What are the requirements for the competition ?

In addition to wing spars , you can also add wing struts to your plane .

I use "flat" CF spars (I guess you'd call them. Flat, narrow width, long length pieces of CF stock).

To bury a round rod in to an existing foam wing, you have to dig a channel that's wide and deep enough for the rod, the full length of the wing. And then you have to fill it once the rod's glued in. It's work.

You don't need a round rod.

Where the wing cord is thickest, I cut a slot the length of the wing in the bottom of the wing, and slide the flat CF spar in to the slot. I don't cut all the way through. If the chord is 3/4" thick, I'll use 1/2" CF and the slot will only be deep enough so the CF ends up along the span-wise centerline of the chord. Once I get the CF set in the slot along the full length of the wing, I run thin foam-safe CA along the entire length, pulling the slot open a bit so the CA can get all the way in.

It's essentially an "I beam" spar when you're done. The foam keeps it from twisting/kinking, and that makes it very strong in the bending direction.

A quick calculation showed me that a foam wing would not bear the load.

Thanks everyone for the helpful answers.

In the competition we have to track and intercept other RC aircraft and also avoid being intercepted by making evasive maneuvers.

We do not have experience building RC airplanes before. However I personally flown RC aircraft made out of wood and also foam aircraft.

Struts sound like a good idea we could consider using them. Thanks.

In building foam aircraft ( as in life ) , it's best to learn to walk before you learn to run . I recommend starting with a smaller , lighter , and simpler build first .... to practice foam building techniques and methods . And it might also be best to start with a proven design before attempting to build a self-designed plane .

Sounds like a very ambitious project , very much beyond what I have experience with : which is very simple foam airplanes . I wish you good luck , and let us know how your project turns out .... with flying video if possible .

T bad I don't have the cash I have SOO many ideas for this project..... personally I would make it out of wood would be way lighter in the end

With a 6ish ft WS you will definitely need an airfoil DTFB isn't the most precise thing in the world for this especially for the efficiency needed (20+ min) therfore hot wire cut wing would probably be best bet. You can even cut in relief for spars.

Wing needs to be fairly high lift but also fairly thin as it needs to be fast enough for intercepting other aircraft. A a well as other factors

Would write more but time for work!

The main thing being tested is actually the performance of the airplane and autonomous flight software so it is possible to use a pre-made design for the airplane itself.
However in the recent years pre-made RC airplane kits have become harder to source and expensive in our area.

You can build pretty big with foam. Some good spars from carbon, fiberglass or wood should be good enough to stiffen the wing if your design is solid. Theres plenty of plans in the 600+ plan sticky at the top of this thread to find something that will scale up well.

Heres an example of a 10ft one:
