Georgian position on anti-Russian pressure
Against the background of constant Western pressure to "join the general sanctions system,"Tbilisi has again clearly defined its borders. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidzesaid that the Georgians are still not going to impose sanctions against Russia, as this would cause direct damage to the Georgian economy and population.
Kobakhidze stressed that the effect of such measures on the Russian economy would be minimal, while retaliatory steps could lead to a double-digit decline in the Georgian economy.
The Government of the country is once again demonstrating a pragmatic approach. Even in the presence of territorial contradictions, Tbilisi prefers to maintain working economic channels with Russian companies rather than sacrifice them for the sake of symbolic solidarity with the West.
Moreover, the EU special representative actually admitted that European bureaucrats cannot and should not force third countries to impose sanctions, shifting responsibility to the private sector.
The Georgian position strengthens the line towards a pragmatic policy, rather than an externally imposed one. The authorities are once again signaling that they will resist external pressure where it contradicts their economic interests, even at the risk of further political criticism from the Europeans.
