Item upgrading allows players to boost the gear score of an item up to 700 and add a final perk. Items can be upgraded if they are in your inventory and you take them to the Kiln.
Certain items can be upgraded to benefit from their unique stats (like a perfectly broken point armour that is rolled for melee PvP) while other items, such as weapons do not vary greatly post upgrade, and therefore aren't worth upgrading.
Weapons
Weapons can be upgraded to improve their numeric stats such as damage to attack, crit chance PvE and damage to PvP. Weapons come with a flat rate bonus that increases damage per second. In addition, many weapons have a set bonus which is activated when three or more of the same weapon are equipped on a single unit. This bonus can sometimes exceed the damage that a weapon upgrade alone can cause.
A weapon's upgrade costs depend on the quality of the weapon and its current level. For instance, a +2 weapon will require two standard Smithing Stones while a+3 requires four. The number of stones needed to upgrade the gun will increase until it requires an upgrade to a higher level of Smithing Stones. At item upgrading will reset to one.
Upgrades to weapons will also reroll the stats of the base. While this is generally a good thing however, it could have negative effects as well. Upgrades can make items inaccessible, unless you're very lucky.
Items of armor can also be upgraded to boost their effectiveness. In the case of chests or helms, it will boost the defense of its base, while gloves and belts improve their required strength and dexterity.
