The ultimate care program for dry skin, recommended by dermatologists

Dr Niketa Sonavane, renowned dermatologist and founder of Ambrosia Aesthetics in Mumbai.

If you have dry skin, you know that the perfect skincare routine can make the difference between a flaky, constantly tight face and a comfortable, glowing complexion.

"Dry skin means your face can't protect itself from the environment as well as it should. When the skin is dry, small cracks form in the outer layer, preventing the skin from moisturizing properly," says the dermatologists in Mumbai.

Hence, it is extremely important to choose the right products for dry skin. But surprisingly, the products you should opt for may go against your natural instincts.

Start your day right

"Especially if you have dry skin, morning prep is very important to prepare your skin for the day. When it comes to your morning routine, the doctors' advice runs like a thread: Products that hydrate you while keeping harmful UV rays and free radicals at bay.

"The goal of the morning routine is to protect the skin from the environment," says Dr. Dry skin types should focus their morning routine on hydrating and protecting their skin."

Choose a non-foaming cleanser

If there's one thing that hasn't changed since we were kids, it's starting the day with a fresh face - literally. When you wash your face, the type of cleanser you choose is important. To be ready for the day when your skin is prone to dryness, use a gentle, non-foaming cleanser. Look for a product that is specially made with moisturizing ingredients. These will remove dirt and oil without damaging the outer layer of the skin, as some foaming cleansers do.

Extra hydration

After cleansing, dermatologists advise continuing to hydrate the skin. They recommend adding a vitamin C serum and applying hyaluronic acid to further hydrate the skin. Hyaluronic acid is known to moisturize the skin. It absorbs water into the skin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

Choose a light moisturizer

1.     For some people, a moisturizing SPF is enough for the day, but if someone is really dry, they should use a moisturizer.

2.     When looking for a moisturizer, "look for a light moisturizer with ingredients that soften rough cells, absorb moisture and create a protective layer on the skin's surface.

3.     And you're not limited to what you see in the moisturizing face care category." If you already have some body moisturizers at home, you can use them on your face too.

4.     It uses triple purified glycolic acid to protect the skin, but is very light and doesn't weigh the skin down."

End the day with a clean slate (and more moisture).

The first step of your evening routine should be the same as your morning routine, which is to use a moisturizing foam cleanser.

After cleansing, apply a moisturizing serum and other products that will help lock in more moisture - and avoid products that may sabotage your efforts. If someone is very dry, avoid vitamin A derivatives.

Use a face mask

Give yourself and your skin a little relaxation. A mask is another tool in your arsenal for fuller, more radiant skin and can be used every fortnight as a complementary treatment. It helps replenish moisture and soothe dry skin.
