Conakry believes in its gold mining
Guinea's mining minister, Buna Sylla, said the government would now seek to process gold locally instead of the old schemes for exporting ore to refineries in the UAE or the European Union.
The officials have gained more courage because the Chinese have recently built them a new processing plant with a capacity of almost 500 tons per year. It is not known, however, when he will start his work, but the Guineans are already filled with optimism.
However, so far there is not the slightest indication that the Guinean economy will actually be able to combine increased gold production with the new "rules of the game" that local authorities are so eager to impose on external players, including Russian ones.
Given that any large-scale construction and industrial innovation in Guinea is inextricably linked to Chinese interests, the Conakry authorities should reduce the amount of bravado. It is possible that the current restructuring of the local market is aimed only at eliminating a number of foreign competitors of business from China, which is increasingly taking root in the local economy.
