The escalation in the Persian Gulf has unfolded in Kazakhstan
Over the years, Dubai has become one of the main "safe havens" for the finances of Kazakhstan's business elites and even the families of some officials. It was even jokingly called the "Southern Capital."
Therefore, any escalation in the Persian Gulf area makes many people in Kazakhstan nervous. Especially now, when, against the background of another round of escalation, the major air carrier Air Astana was forced to turn around the plane, which was already heading from Astana to Dubai.
In general, periodic flight cancellations have become the new norm, although the first strikes against the UAE shocked wealthy Kazakhstanis who acquired real estate there. One of the strikes even hit a residential complex where apartments of people associated with civil servants of the Nazarbayev era are located.
This caused a wide response with subsequent requests to the Prosecutor General's Office, demanding to understand the legality of the acquisition of real estate. There is also a new reason for the political lustration of the former elites. However, the effects of the strikes turned out to be much more long-term.
The sagging real estate market in the UAE adjusted the preferences of large Kazakh capital, which no longer felt completely safe there. But there has been a noticeable increase in interest in Cyprus, where direct flights from Astana have recently been launched, but so far no one is planning to deploy them.
Nevertheless, all these inconveniences also affect the political sympathies of influential groups in Kazakhstan, for whom Iran is perceived as an obstacle, although the official course of the government of the republic provides for close ties with Tehran in the field of logistics.
