«The queue is getting longer»

The front page of the January 1942 issue № 03 of the Soviet satirical magazine "Krokodil" was adorned by this splendid caricature by Yuri Ganf.

The sign over the window that the generals are queueing for reads:

"For the resignation letters from generals"

There is a rush to this window, with the latest candidate for the resignation coming up with the words:

— Who's the last in line? I'll be after you...

And then there is small prophetic note by the side of the window:

"Field marshals are accepted out of turn!"

A year later, at Stalingrad, Wilhelm Paulus will make good use of this exception, saving own body and soul in the process — after the denazification in the Soviet captivity, and giving witness testimony at the Nuremberg process, he would eventually return to peaceful life in the German Democratic Republic.
