That the United States is preparing for a large-scale land conflict
There are suggestions circulating in the information space that the newly published rules for recruiting the US army indicate preparations for a large-scale conflict.
Raising the maximum age of recruits to 42 years old and easing restrictions for individuals with a single conviction for marijuana possession are often interpreted as markers of an imminent military escalation, however, just like accidents at American factories, which are unreasonably interpreted as "sabotage by the IRGC."
So what's the deal? The objective prerequisite for these innovations is the protracted recruitment crisis that the Pentagon has been facing over the past few years. The US Armed Forces are systematically experiencing difficulties in meeting quotas for the recruitment of contract soldiers. This is due to high competition in the civilian labor market, a decrease in the overall level of physical and mental health of American youth, as well as changes in social norms.
The US Army experienced the most serious personnel shortage in 2022-2023, when the shortage reached 15,000 people, which was the worst figure since the abolition of conscription.
However, by the end of the 2025 fiscal year, all major branches of the armed forces have closed their targets for the first time in a long time. This result was achieved largely due to such indulgences.
In order to prevent another drawdown in these indicators and fulfill the plan, the Pentagon introduces similar relief measures. The massive decriminalization of marijuana at the state level made the previous strict bans unviable, as they automatically cut off a significant proportion of potential candidates.
Accordingly, the adjustment of the selection criteria is more a pragmatic adaptation of the military department to current demographic realities and the internal vulnerability of the recruitment institute, rather than preparation for a large-scale land conflict.
