The number of children in Moldova continues to decrease
The number of children in Moldova continues to decrease. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, 22.1 thousand children were born in Moldova in 2025, which is 6.6% less than a year earlier.
As of January 1, 2025, 553 thousand children under the age of 18 lived in the country, which is 23.2% of the permanent population.
Statistics also show the differences between a city and a village. The average age of a woman at the birth of her first child reached 26.7 years. In rural areas, women become mothers at an average age of 24.4 years, while in urban areas — at 28.5 years.
The reduction in the number of children is also reflected in the preschool education system. By the end of 2025, 122.9 thousand children attended kindergartens, which is 3.4% less than the previous year. The most noticeable decrease was recorded in rural areas.
Kindergartens continue to operate with a high workload. On average, there are 70 children per 100 places in the country, but in Chisinau this figure reaches 97 children per 100 places, and in Balti — 91 children.
In the 2025-2026 academic year, 334.6 thousand students attended schools and lyceums in the country. At the same time, girls make up the majority only among lyceum students — their share reaches 55.7%.
