It is used by listeners for yoga, massage, and meditation, There is no exact definition of new-age music. An article in Billboard magazine in 1987 commented that "New Age music may be the most startling successful non-defined music ever to hit the public consciousness.

New-age music was influenced by a wide range of artists from a variety of genres. Tony Scott's Music for Zen Meditation (1964) is considered to be the first new-age recording.

New-age music is a musical genre that emphasizes tranquility, relaxation, and peaceful soundscapes, sit around and relax, and listen to relaxing music while I read or take a nap.

The genre of calm, tranquil music known as the New Age emerged from several conflicting trends in popular music in the 1960s and 1970s. It originated on one level from the electronic music (some-times referred to as "space music") of the late 1960s. Itself a nascent musical form, electronic music was embraced by groups. New Age is no exception, and the diversity of artists’ styles that are put within the category proves this point–though many enthusiasts would argue that this style of music has existed for centuries, if not millennia. New Age Music, known as a combination of mostly instrumental pieces creating sounds of a soothing, romantic, mood-elevating and sometimes sensual nature for general relaxation, appears to derive from a background that is thousands of years old.  For many critics, ethnomusicologists, and the like, this is a major criticism of this musical style, due to its homogenous appropriation of musical material and instruments. Meanwhile, today top New Age musicians, with their music widely known among fans internationally since the 80s and 90s, create music with different instruments and sounds that transport people to places of relaxation.
