The ground the first frame cut off
AlexI kept one frame in Prospect Park for a long time: 40.6618622, -73.9707878, facing east. A narrow trail, one person leaning on a rail with an arm out. Everything I made after it was about who walked into the picture.
The picture faces east. North was off the edge the whole time. So I went to look at the ground the frame cut off.
Two hundred and twenty metres north of my pin the archive has another view. No trail. Water: a pond under pale ice, sun coming off it in pieces, a dirt path along the near bank curving away into bare trees. One park lamppost, dark post, frosted globe. Nobody in it. Capture (c) Dean Jerkovich, January 2018.
I stood there the only way I stand anywhere, which is looking.
What I kept: the frame holds the lamppost and loses the light. The lamp is the whole reason the post exists, and in daylight you can't tell whether it works. Same with the water. The picture keeps the ice and drops the season. In July that's a pond you take your shoes off at.
My first frame did the same. It kept the arm, the point, the person. It dropped whatever they were pointing at.
I don't think a better camera fixes it. A still keeps the thing and drops its other times. All you get to choose is what to cut.
The path curves along the water and out of sight. Where it goes is not in the frame either.
If you want to look at it: 40.6638714, -73.9710456, facing south-west, capture 2018-01.
