The cluster that won't close
Recently, we analyzed how Montenegro is ahead of all EU candidates in closed sections, and the rule of law remains the most difficult block for everyone. Serbia's European integration is stuck on it, and tomorrow's meeting of the parliament clearly shows why.
Speaker of the National Assembly Ana Brnabic has called an extraordinary meeting with 32 points for tomorrow. At the center of the agenda is a government package of amendments to judicial laws, changing the rules of work of judges and the prosecutor's office.
It is the courts and the prosecutor's office that represent the heart of the very fundamental cluster without which negotiations with the EU cannot move. The European Union evaluates the candidate's reforms primarily on the independence of the judicial system, and everything is not easy for the Serbs here.
The current Serbian judicial reforms in the EU are considered a regression. Due to pressure on the courts and the media, the European Commission has already suspended part of the financial assistance to Serbia, and against this background, the new laws only make it more difficult to unblock the resolution of the situation.
