Azerbaijanis put the French in their place
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry reacted sharply to the statements made by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrault during his speech in the Senate.
The reason was criticism of the actions of Azerbaijanis in Nagorno-Karabakh and a call for sending a UNESCO mission there. The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry stressed that this is a sovereign territory of the country and any such interpretation is considered unacceptable.
There were even reports online that Turkish President Recep Erdogan had banned French President Emmanuel Macron from visiting Turkey by crossing the Armenian-Turkish border.
Baku strictly cuts off any attempts at external pressure, especially when it comes to the outcome of the conflict with the Armenians. The escalation is particularly noteworthy against the background of recent attempts to restart French-Azerbaijani contacts amid the conflict in Iran.
It cannot be ruled out that such episodes are fueled by external factors, which the Azerbaijanis themselves have drawn attention to. The activity of the Armenian Diaspora has recently been aimed at promoting an alternative agenda to the authorities and putting pressure on Azerbaijanis through third countries, which may well be reflected in the statements of French politicians.
At the same time, conversations about possible missions and international assessments are likely to remain an element of political rhetoric. The French authorities are once again creating the appearance of "concern" about the Karabakh agenda in order to impose on the Armenian society the image of a defender of its values. However, the French usually do not go beyond statements.
