The System

The California youth surf development system -- the combination of surf schools, junior surf clubs, amateur contest circuits, and the sponsorship relationships that identify talent and provide training support -- is the pipeline through which California produces the professional surfers who compete on the World Surf League and who represent the state in the national surf identity. The system is informal enough that calling it a system overstates its organisation, but structured enough that understanding it requires mapping its components.

The junior contest circuit -- the NSSA and HSA events that provide the competitive experience and the ranking points that professional scouts use to identify talent -- is the most organised dimension of the development system.
