Jack Lemmon wrote that the first sneak preview had a bad reaction with many audience walkouts. Many studio personnel and agents offered advice to Billy Wilder on what scenes to reshoot, add and cut. Lemmon asked Wilder what he was going to do. Wilder responded: "Why, nothing. This is a very funny movie and I believe in it just as it is. Maybe this is the wrong neighborhood in which to have shown it. At any rate, I don't panic over one preview. It's a hell of a movie." Wilder held the next preview in the Westwood section of Los Angeles, and the audience stood up and cheered.
Early in the movie, Joe talks about the Brooklyn Dodgers, a name not officially used until 1932. From 1914 to 1931 the Brooklyn baseball team was the Robins, not the Dodgers. However, the Dodgers had been an unofficial nickname since 1895, and the World Series program from 1920 even referred to them as the Dodgers instead of the Robins.

A gender-bending comedy ahead of its time
What Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis do in "Some Like it Hot" would be par for the course in modern movies – every other month, similar fish-out-of-water movies premiere with men posing as women ("Tootsie"), women posing as men ("The Associate"), black people posing as white people ("White Chicks"), and on and on. What makes "Some Like it Hot" different is two things: the strength of its comedy, and the presence of Marilyn Monroe, then at the height of stardom. Lemmon and Curtis turn in admirable performances both as Joe and Jerry, and as Josephine and Daphne. Tony Curtis does Lemmon one better by creating a third identity, "Junior", in order to woo Sugar Kane (Monroe). Tying the pair's story into the Chicago Valentine's Day Massacre, where a gang war spilled over into a parking garage, leaving a number of people lined up against the wall and shot, is a deft touch (though the serious tone of these gang sequences contrasts sharply with the bulk of the movie). The movie does an excellent job building the far-fetched stakes of the movie ever-higher, from their finding refuge from vengeful gangs in a women's jazz band, to their showdown in the Florida hotel, to the eventual revealing of Curtis' and Lemmon's identities. The movie's surprisingly suggestive and risque content is at odds with the time frame of the movie, and even with the period of the movie's creation. The many smart double-entendres and plays on words are very well-written, and alternate between lowbrow and highbrow comedy, The films only fault might be a couple of overlong musical numbers, performed either by the whole band or soloed by Sugar Kane. Though to be expected in a Marilyn Monroe film, these musical acts are literal "show stoppers" that bring the comedic momentum of the film to a screeching halt. However, it is easy to over look these minor defects in the movie as a whole, because by and large it is quite funny – no wonder it s considered a classic – and after all, "nobody's perfect".

Jerry : Oh no you don't! Osgood, I'm gonna level with you. We can't get married at all.
Jerry : Well, in the first place, I'm not a natural blonde.
Jerry : I smoke! I smoke all the time!
Jerry : Well, I have a terrible past. For three years now, I've been living with a saxophone player.
Jerry : [tragically] I can never have children!
Jerry : But you don't understand, Osgood! Ohh...
[Jerry finally gives up and pulls off his wig]
Osgood : [shrugs] Well, nobody's perfect!
[Jerry looks on with disbelief as Osgood continues smiling with indifference. Fade out]

The 4K Blu-ray of Some Like it Hot, one of the funniest and most beloved comedies of all time, looks great. Not mind bogglingly incredible like some 4K Blu-rays, but a pretty huge step up from any other version out in any other format. Being a film from it's time period, the film grain was a little thick for my taste, but that's the way film stock from that time period was. No way to reduce it without reducing fine detail in the picture (and the fine detail looks very good--I'm glad they didn't mess with it in any way). The addition of HDR certainly brings some welcome and very attractive "pop" and "sparkle" to the image that SDR versions will unfortunately always lack by their very nature. This is by far the best I have ever seen this wonderful movie look and I am extremely happy I made the purchase of this 4K disc. The movie itself is one of the most popular comedies of all time. In it, Jack Lemon and Tony Curtis (who's character has a reputation as an incorrigible womanizer) play prohibition era musicians who accidentally witness the St. Valentine's Day massacre and, as a result of being the only living witnesses, become hunted by the mob (who would like to turn them into "no longer living" witnesses). Since the mob is watching every bus and train station while hunting them, the only way the two musicians can come up with to escape the city under the mob's noses is to dress up as women and travel by train in the guise of the newest members to join an all woman band travelling to a job in Florida. The idea is that once they reach their destination and are safely away from the city and in Florida (where the band has their gig at a very posh resort hotel) they'll then ditch the women's clothing and skedaddle. But, then they meet the sexy and vivacious Marilyn Monroe, who simply can't be resisted by the lecherous Tony Curtis. He must have her and simply cannot fight his hormones enough to resist, even if it means keeping up the routine of being a woman in order to, counter intuitively, get close to her. And then arrives the millionaire on the scene, played by comedian Joe E. Brown, who falls head over heals for Jack Lemon while in the guise of his female alter ego Daphne. And the millionaire will not take no for an answer! He showers Jack Lemon with gifts and fancy dates so overwhelming that they actually begin to turn his head! He gets so carried away that he has to keep reminding himself over and over again that he's not actually a woman! This is one crazy, goofy, and very funny classic masterpiece of a comedy that has remained beloved by viewers over the many decades since it was first made. If you love this movie (and many, many millions like myself do), then this 4K disc is a must buy item. I can't imagine a better version ever being available. This disc is truly the penultimate version of this wonderful film.

This was entertaining but not my favorite Monroe film. Tony Curtis was his handsome self and both he and Jack Lemmon were fun to watch as men impersonating women in an all girl band in order to escape the mob. Complications, as one would expect, ensue when the gorgeous, innocent Marilyn makes an appearance and befriends them, taking them into her confidence. Mix-ups, hi jinx, and mayhem are bound to happen, and it all becomes good fun. Jack Lemmon isn't my favorite actor. Always hyper and always the same. But after a while he grew on me. The 60's is generally my least favorite era for movies. Frothy, silly, over the top. This 1959 movie is right on the edge of the 60's era and felt like it was tottering heavily in that direction. I wouldn't have rated it for the many oscars it won, but it was enjoyable enough to keep.

There are a lot of movies I thought were funny twenty or thirty years ago, and try watching them again to find they just don't work any longer. Not true of this movie. It is just as funny as the first time I saw it. The three principle characters each perform their roles superbly. The supporting cast is great too. I don't want to give anything away, but if by some chance you have not yet seen this and you appreciate silly comedy done well, this is a movie worth having. I even bought it a second time because I misplaced my original copy.
