I have been reading the selected Virginia Woolf letters for the past three weeks, which is the research for the essay that the column has been developing on the relationship between the letter and the diary in Woolf practice. The letters reveal the Woolf who writes for a specific reader rather than the Woolf who writes for the private record. The distinction produces different prose. Both are remarkable.
