THE Witcher viewers slammed the "gratuitous" sex scenes as bosses are accused of double standards with the "excessive" female nudity.
Netflix's fantasy epic has received mixed reviews from fans and critics alike but one main criticism is the show's focus on nudity.
While there are no shortage of naked women in the show, fans have pointed out that Geralt - played by Superman actor Henry Cavill - has his clothes on throughout.
One person wrote: "C'mon, if you're going to have battlefield-level violence and nudity you could at least give us a proper Cavill sex scene"
Another added: "Started watching The Witcher on Netflix with Henry Cavill . I'm dismayed at the amount of gratuitous nudity these young actresses are being subjected to. It is exploitative."
A third remarked: "The gratuitous female nudity within the first 10 minutes of #TheWitcher can p*ss right off. There is absolutely no need for it yet these days it's thrown in like it's dialogue."

#TheWitcher on Netflix is such a problematic show for us gays. They literally gave us Henry Cavill in a female centric formula but didn’t show him naked. I haven’t seen an adult show fade to black 2 seconds into the sex scene since forever🙃 yet we get plenty of Yennefer titties. pic.twitter.com/efq20lmbAV
Been trying to find a new show to watch while waiting for Outlander and the Last Kingdom to return. Started watching The Witcher on Netflix with Henry Cavill. I’m am dismayed at the amount of gratuitous nudity these young actresses are being subjected to. It is exploitative.
Just watched three episodes of #TheWitcher It left me confused and disappointed. So much female nudity, violence against women, and women portrayed as monsters. Surely we can do better?
The Witcher follows the adventures of Geralt, a mutant mercenary who hunts monsters for money.
Along the way he meets a variety of characters - and sleeps with many of them, including his love Yennefer (Anya Chalotra).
Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich previously denied the show would be using the sex in a gratuitous way.
Speaking to Variety at the Lucca Comics & Games convention, she said: "With television pushing more into premium cable and now into streaming, you can say almost anything, you can see almost anything, you can do almost anything.
"The interesting [thing] to me is not relying on that as a crutch. Audiences are really savvy. They don’t need to be shocked.
"They are looking to enjoy a good story. So whenever I approach sexuality, intimacy between characters, or nudity, to me it’s about: Does this do anything for our story?… I always go back to story and character, and if it doesn’t have anything to do with those we don’t need it."

The Steamy Witcher Season 2 Scene Henry Cavill Refused To Film

By Carolyn Jenkins / Dec. 22, 2021 10:21 am EDT
Some mild spoilers ahead for "The Witcher" Season 2
The torrid and passionate love affair between Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) and Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra) is a central part of Netflix's "The Witcher" Season 1. The Witcher and the all-powerful mage share more than just chemistry; their romantic connection grows over time and becomes something perhaps more binding than either of them can articulate. It makes sense, too, because their relationship spans years and is full of steamy nights followed by mornings full of heartache. In one powerful scene, Geralt decides to bind his fate to Yennefer's through a Djinn's wish to save her. However good his intentions were, it fractures Yennefer's trust and the relationship along with it.
Though they part ways, it doesn't mean Geralt is without companionship. Another contender for the Witcher's heart is sorceress Triss Merigold (Anna Shaffer). This love triangle in "The Witcher" is a source of great debate that leaves viewers to wonder which woman, if any, is right for him. Although it seems Geralt leans toward Team Yennefer, there are still moments for him to share with both women in Season 2.
When it comes to his connection to Yennefer, it seems all may not be entirely lost. In the latest season, the couple reunites and share a moment that speaks to their feelings for one another. As it turns out, Cavill and Chalotra played an integral role in getting the tone of this scene right, as "The Witcher" actor explains in a new interview.
The reunion between Yennefer and Geralt in "The Witcher" Season 2 is a long time coming. Geralt operates under the assumption Yennefer dies at the Battle of Sodden Hill. And, after her heartbreak in Season 1, Yennefer still desires Geralt. Their reunion is important for the couple and, while filming the new season, it was even more important to the actors to get right. In a recent interview with Syfy Wire , Henry Cavill stated that what was originally on the script page was not what he and co-star Anya Chalotra filmed.
"We just wanted to be very careful that it was true and real, and it didn't turn into something that we, as actors, didn't believe it should be," Cavill stated. When Yennefer and Geralt unite, they embrace, but it doesn't go further than that. He continued: "We wanted it to be emotional rather than sexual. It was really, really important, and we had to lean away from what was originally on the page." Initially, Geralt and Yennefer were written to have a more passionate night. But Cavill and Chalotra did not think that would stay true to the characters. This was a moment about emotional connection. A sexual liaison would have been distracting and, per Cavill, something that didn't send the right message about how those characters felt in the moment.
Another aspect of Geralt and Yennefer's relationship involves Ciri (Freya Allan). In the books, Yennefer is like a mother to the princess . The new scene instead shows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri getting to know one another. It's important groundwork for the newfound family to bond. As such, Cavill and Chalotra's active involvement to rework the scene ultimately helps integrate Ciri more naturally into the group.

In The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings , there are five confirmed, discrete romance options (though the term 'romance' is used loosely, since three of the encounters in question are essentially casual sex). Triss is the most serious of these, in the sense that there is an actual depth and continuation of this relationship.

All told, Geralt 's intimate liaisons can involve Triss , Ves , the Succubus , Mottle , and prostitutes at either of the two brothels . As of the Enhanced Edition, there is also an opportunity for sex with Cynthia in Chapter III if (a) following Iorveth's path and (b) resolving The Secrets of Loc Muinne in a very specific way.

The opening scene of Geralt's earliest Prologue story (as recounted to Roche in The Dungeons of the La Valettes ) shows him getting up as Triss lies naked beside him in her tent. Though Geralt wakes her up, a rude interruption in the form of King Foltest 's messenger enters, so it isn't a romantic encounter as such, but is indicative of one happening prior to that - a typical "morning after" scene.

A singular opportunity arises in Act I during the quest The Rose of Remembrance . When given the option to go alone or take Triss, choose to take her with. After a battle partway through the quest, the ground will collapse beneath you, sending you and Triss plummeting into an ancient elven bathhouse. After failed attempts at escape it becomes apparent that you will be spending some time here. Talking to Triss and suggesting that she take a bath will initiate the most celebrated and extensively-crafted sex scene of the game.

Cynthia is first encountered at Philippa Eilhart's house in Vergen, and can be questioned on some subjects during that time. Later, she is involved in The Secrets of Loc Muinne , content added in the Enhanced Edition.
