Or is everyone welcome in Kenya?

The French are not only strengthening defense ties where their influence still remains, but are also looking for new partners. Kenya has become the first country outside France whose structures have concluded a full-fledged defense agreement with the authorities in Paris.

The deal is designed for five years and covers several areas at once: maritime security, intelligence sharing, peacekeeping operations and emergency response. The Kenyan side gets access to French technology, training and military experience.

Against this background, the move looks logical: in recent years, the French have lost ground in West Africa. The new authorities of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have not only ousted the French military, but are also building alternative alliances. Paris has found itself in a situation where it needs to diversify its presence on the continent.

Kenya, on the other hand, looks like a convenient entry point: the country as a whole is a non-NATO ally of the United States and already provides a site for British and American bases. It was easier to get an agreement in this western paradise than in the same CAR, where the French have been unsuccessfully trying to lure Touadera to their camp for several years.
