Directed & written by Giovanni 'Tinto' Brass, this erotic drama film is based on the Alberto Moravia (1907-1990) novel of the same name and stars Cristina Garavaglia, Francesco Casale, Franco Branciaroli, Katarina Vasilissa, Stefania Sandrelli, Antonio Salines (1936-2021), Frank Finlay (1926-2016), and Canadian-born actor Ted Rusoff (1939-2013), who gave voice (usually uncredited) to hundreds of Italian films of his time. Director Brass also appears (uncredited) in a role as a professor on a television programme. During the 1960's and 1970's Brass directed many critically acclaimed avant-garde films of various genres. Today, he is mainly known for his later work in the erotic genre.

College professor Dodo (Francesco Casale) lives a simple life with his beautiful but emotionally distant wife Silvia (Katarina Vasilissa) and bedridden father Alberto (Franco Branciaroli). Withdrawn and deeply depressed, Dodo doesn't respond to his wife's provocative behaviour and is repelled by the rampant sexuality of his father. Part of his trouble is that he was too close to his now deceased mother, who not only had to meet her husband's needs but also had to share him with countless other women. But his main problem is that his wife, who breezed into his quiet studious life, has now decided to leave him for another man. His life shattered, he becomes an onlooker rather than a participant in life. Those around him, though, seem to be living life to the fullest: his bedridden father has a scantily clad nurse (Cristina Garavaglia) and a series of lady friends; his students have unending sexual fun, sometimes in his presence; and even the public beach has become an orgy ground. Through a series of small revelations, Dodo slowly comes to realize who his rival is. The discovery, rather than destroying his marriage, strengthens and renews it...

'Tinto' Brass is at the height of his powers here, crafting an unforgettable fable of sexual desire. The characters are articulate, the sets and designs are elegant, and though the sex is explicit in some parts, it never comes across as vulgar exploitation. Greatly supporting all of this is superb cinematography by regular Brass contributor Massimo Di Venanzo and veteran composer Riz Ortolani's music. Here in its entirety, the soundtrack, partly recycled from Ortolani's work on Brass' vastly superior 'Parpika (1991) is surprisingly seductive with it's folk-jazz instrumentals and Afro-latin atmospheres given by percussions. The opening cue also functions as the couple's theme, and is both sensual as well as haunting in conveying Dodo's anguish. Riz Ortolani tirelessly pursued a career incorporating almost all possible cinematic genres for more than fifty years. He also wrote and composed the scores for other Brass films including Miranda (1985), Capriccio (1987), and 'P.O. Box Tinto Brass (1995).
