I was hoping for something more original or at least something well researched. For example, the information about the G-spot and Dr. Grafenberg was inaccurate. Though it is true that stimulating the anterior wall without simultaneously stimulating the clitoris may be difficult to do, we do now recognize that Dr. Grafenberg was correct in that the urethra has it's own erectile tissue and nerve endings that are very stimulatory when stimulated with pressure on the anterior vaginal wall. In other words, there IS an orgasm that can originate primarily from the vagina in some women. Not saying that's especially the thing to make a goal but to deny the existence of such is simply inaccurate. Also, when it comes to female ejaculation, we do know from ultrasound studies that some women do ejaculate significant amounts of volume. It's a real phenomenon that should not be discounted. Her report about the O-Shot® procedure ignores multiple supportive papers and gives an inaccurate description of the procedure. More importantly, her whole attitude about what sex can do other than bring pleasure is especially disturbing. A quote from the book: "As long as you're having an orgasm or two, who cares about anything else?" That statement and others in the book seem to discount that some of us actually care about our lover. It seems to me that the reasons for sex are much more than just pleasure--they include creativity, energy, health, clarity of thought, better sleep, and improved relationships. To teach that a woman should only be concerned with her own orgasms seems to be the reverse side of the ugly coin of the man who just wants to get off and then roll over and go to sleep without regard for his lover. So, other than being unoriginal and poorly researched, the whole attitude and premise of the book seem to miss the most important reasons for sex. Disappointing and potentially toxic, but the anatomy diagrams could be useful to some.

I honestly can say that 5 stars is not enough to properly rate this book. I am a father to an amazing little girl, a husband to an amazing wife, and a future medical professional (not gynecology) and I recommend anyone who also falls into one of those categories (honestly every single person on the planet should read this) to pick up this book. Dr Jen Gunter basically wrote a “medical textbook” that is made for anyone to be able read and understand completely. Her writing is informative, put together in a way that makes sense, and is INCREDIBLY funny through out the book to keep your interest. I can say I have already learned a lot and I’m only 1/4 of the way through. I can say than any book Dr Gunter writes from this point on, I will pre-order and await its arrival with excitement and anticipation for the knowledge she will be imparting in my life. Thank you Dr Gunter for your 2 decades of work and caring enough to make you knowledge available to the world.

I’m going to make a bold claim: if you are a person with a vagina, you need this book. Whether you read it front to back or use it as a resource tool, it is one of the most important books I’ve read for my own health and well-being and I commend it to everyone. I’m a relatively informed cis-het woman and I still learned so much in this book. Dr. Jen Gunter writes in an accessible, engaging style. Her astute insights and observations are interspersed with humor and wit. Her goal is to empower and inform and she more than did the job. I especially appreciated how she showed the role of patriarchy in women’s health: "Medicine has been steeped in man-splaining from the start.” We need so much more research and information on vaginas and vulvas and she is shining a bright light for us. There are chapters like how to discuss concerns with your doctor, as well as chapters on topics like menopause, genital hygiene, Toxic Shock Syndrome (not as big of a risk as I thought!), and hair removal. It’s one of the most thorough resources I’ve ever read and I feel so much more empowered as a result, as well as more aware of what I didn’t know before because of how little good information is out there. We are constantly exposed to poor research and often gaslit for our concerns so it is beyond helpful to have a guide at the ready should you experience any symptoms or receive a diagnosis. This is a truly inclusive book. Chapter 3 is specifically about trans people: Vaginas and Vulvas in Transition. It was so great to see the various concerns and barriers to care addressed. Throughout the book, she specifically notes risk factors and concerns for those who are lesbian, bisexual, or trans. The myth-busting portions proved to be particularly valuable, whether it was something I’d heard or done before or not. For instance, I was flummoxed to learn wearing cotton underwear to prevent yeast infections is a myth. Something I've heard my whole life! But there’s negligible research to prove that claim, no matter how often I’ve heard that advice. Same goes with peeing after sex to prevent a UTI. Two studies showed there is no correlation there. Related to all this myth-busting is Gunter’s stringent research methodology. She takes great pains to reference when research has been negligible, when sample sizes are too small to give us clear results, when more search is needed, and so on. She backs up her work and shows where more information was needed to make a determination. There’s also an entire chapter on how to evaluate medical research, which includes how to determine whether bias is at play and where to even start online. As someone who was a sociology major, I wish this was something more people knew, particularly how to evaluate research quality, so I was glad to see her lay it out. I’ll be recommending this one to everyone I know. All my gratitude to Dr. Gunter for writing it. Disclosure: I received an advanced copy from Citadel Press in exchange for an honest review.

The owner's manual that everyone should have

Firstly, I'm male; secondly a fan of Dr Gunter. Dr Gunter is a Canadian Ob/Gyn and a campaigner for women's health and rights. Dr Gunter's style is straight-forward, humorous, no-nonsense and devoid of any coyness. My poor (male) brain is struggling with the number and range of subjects she covers. I don't know if every woman should have a copy but I do think every man should.

Brilliant and informative, a must read.

Very very informative. A must read for everyone, woman, teens, dads, husband. We can always learn more. I thought the book was fantastic just what I've been waiting for. There's not many books out about woman's issues including pelvic organ Prolapse but this book I would highly recommend it covers a wide range of topics. Brilliant.

Every woman needs this!

Read an interview with the author on the strength of which I bought 4 copies - 1 for me and 3 for the young women closest to me (2 daughters and son’s girlfriend). Shocking to confirm what she said - we know so little about our own anatomy and need to. A very well received gift from me to them and myself.

Everything you didn't know you didn't know about your v.

Really interesting, and an excellent resource. I would note, the focus is very much on the health of the vagina, so there's nothing about other parts of the reproductive system. It covers what it says it will, and absolutely nothing more or less. But obviously there are more things to consider than just your vagina when choosing, say, contraceptives. Thus this is an enlightening read (not least for what I now realise some people do! omg...) but it's not the first and last word on all things women's health, just one part of it.
