The Universal Basic Income Evidence

What the UBI pilots and natural experiments have produced and what they show

The Evidence

The Universal Basic Income evidence base has grown substantially in the past decade through a combination of purpose-designed randomised controlled trials and the analysis of natural experiments that approximate UBI conditions. The major pilots: the Stockton SEED programme, the Alaska Permanent Fund dividend studies, the Finnish basic income experiment, and the ongoing guaranteed income programmes that approximately 150 US cities and counties have been running since 2019.

The Findings

The findings: the employment effects of unconditional cash transfers in the completed studies are consistently negligible to slightly positive -- the recipients of guaranteed income programmes are not working less than the control group. The mental health effects are consistently positive. The financial stability effects are consistently positive. The evidence does not support the primary objection to UBI that its critics consistently make.
