Path of Exile Item Upgrades
The performance of a variety of Path of Exile items can be enhanced by upgrading them. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.
Often times however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is beaten out by Rare-grade gear because of their requirements.
Armor
Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They increase the effectiveness of the item they're connected to. Armor upgrades are available in the world of games and are available from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Alternately, they can be salvaged from items with upgrade components in them using a specialist or more powerful salvage kit.
The amount of damage a piece of armor or weapon will absorb is contingent on the level of its upgrades. The absorption of damage by an armor piece will increase when it's upgraded to its maximum upgrade level. However, it's important to keep in mind that this will increase its weight, which will cause it to weigh more than it was before.
There are a few different types of armor upgrades available in the game and they all have different effects. Some upgrades give armor a greater number of health points while others make it more powerful and lighter. The name of the armor upgrade will tell you the kind of upgrade an item can receive, as shown below.
A few upgrades are magic or a hybrid of technology and magic which is indicated by an "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Certain upgrades also require fees for use. They are referred to as "Charges" entries in the table. These charges are constantly updated or never expire based on the upgrade.

Most players will want to prioritize weapon upgrades for the weapons they most often use to help them level up faster. Trinkets
Trinkets are small pieces of equipment that bestow a wide range of tiny but valuable advantages to your hero. They can be acquired starting in the beginning areas as loot, personal story rewards, from vendors, and through doing road interactions. They may also be crafted by jewelers and later found or purchased on the Trading Post.
The first trinkets that a player can unlock is the cloak, which grants a small, but valuable boost in speed of movement and evasion. The player can then collect necklaces, amulets, and rings in a similar fashion to how they acquired weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment comes with one upgrade slot that accepts either a universal upgrade or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be utilized on any device. Jewels are not upgradeable or replaced and are only compatible with certain trinkets.
These trinkets provide additional buffs and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't in combat. This lets the hero perform better when they are not active and also helps make up for a lack of a solid team or any slots in the talent tree which would normally be filled with the hero's ideal statistics.
As a rule trinket upgrades should be prioritized over BiS (Best in Slot) items you won't replace soon. Also, consider items with desirable statistics that are less significant than the iLevel for the item that is to be upgraded. This is especially true if an item has multiple stats that you wish to upgrade, as it's usually better to upgrade a single important stat rather than two sub-optimal ones.
Jungle players often upgrade their yellow trinkets to a red trinket at the start of the game. Mid and top players however, will choose a pink or green ward, depending on the matchup. These choices will have an impact on the ability of a hero to control the map.
In addition to the items listed above, players will also find other trinkets that form trophies and rewards throughout the game.
