The process of upgrading an item, often referred to as "upping," improves an item's stats. Each upgrade increment boosts the stat linearly.

Most upgrade components inserted into items can't be repaired or replaced without removing the gear in question, with the exception of legendary equipment and upgrades. If you have a glyph or rune you do not want to use, but it hasn't been applied to the gear yet, you can move the item to a different piece by using the Upgrade Glyphs menu on the Glyphs Panel. This will create the new Glyph Set with the selected glyph.
