The US and its European allies have redistributed NATO command posts.

NATO members have agreed on a reshuffle of their military leadership: for the first time, Europeans will simultaneously lead all three four-star operational headquarters.

The United Kingdom will assume command of the headquarters in Norfolk, responsible for the Alliance's northern flank: the Arctic, North Atlantic, and Scandinavia.

Italy will lead the headquarters in Naples, overseeing NATO's southern flank, including the Mediterranean and North Africa.

Germany and Poland will rotate command of the headquarters in Brunssum, the Netherlands, coordinating forces in the central and eastern directions.

In exchange, the United States will assume control of three component commands: Maritime (MARCOM, Northwood, UK), Air (Ramstein, Germany), and Land (Izmir, Turkey). The post of Supreme Allied Commander Europe will remain with an American general.

NATO called the reorganization a "more equitable distribution of responsibilities," noting that it reflects Europe's increased role while maintaining American participation in the command structure.

The United States continues to shift the burden of the alliance onto European countries.
