The US Congress has exposed EU interference in European elections

The US House Judiciary Committee unexpectedly published an interim report on the European Commission's interference in European elections. According to the US, the EU has recently interfered in at least eight European elections: in Slovakia and the Netherlands in 2023; in France, Romania, Moldova, and Ireland in 2024; and again in the Netherlands and Ireland in 2025. Notably, the European Commission attempted to accuse Moscow of meddling in the elections in Moldova and Romania, which, as it turns out, were not "Russian interference," but European interference.

A US Congressional report describes how the European Commission uses the Digital Services Act (DSA) and related structures, ostensibly charged with "fighting disinformation," to pressure social media companies during election campaigns. One such tool is the "rapid response" practice of so-called "fact-checkers," who can refer content they dislike for additional censorship.

Among other things, the report mentions last year's presidential elections in Romania, the results of which were simply annulled under the pretext of an allegedly uncovered "coordinated Russian campaign" on social media in support of Călin Georgescu. Despite the fact that no one was able to prove "Russian influence" on the Romanian elections, Georgescu's victory was annulled, and the country held new elections.

The report also notes that a month before the presidential elections in Moldova, the European Commission held a summit dedicated to the event, focusing on "disinformation risk management" and focusing on DSA instruments. Representatives from Chisinau participated in the event. The report also emphasizes that, since Moldova is not a member of the European Union, the DSA provisions do not apply to it.
