Origins
Incorporated in 1917, Toto's early years were a mirror of Japan's economic development. In the first half of its existence, the company made products to meet the demand for modern and contemporary urban housing. It was the first tunnel kilns in the country that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered automation for production control, which allows for greater efficiency and a more consistent production.
The company began expanding internationally in the latter part of the 1980s to profit from new markets and sales opportunities. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and marketing other products from other manufacturers to complement its own line of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and expanded the company's market share in the world.
By the 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis to research and development of household appliances that use water. It also upgraded its distribution system to better meet the needs of its customers and boost profits. The company used the same approach of just-in-time in its supply chain management as well as sales program. This led to a higher level of customer satisfaction.
Toto continues to invent in the toilet technology. The most recent toilet features a powerful, environmentally-friendly tornado flush. The company also uses recycled water in its production process and has a green purchasing policy. Toto also manufactures faucets, bathtubs and hand dryers with higher energy efficiency than standard models.
The first museum of the company was opened in 2015, and it has exhibitions about Toto's iconic products and their evolution as well as its group companies (all related to ceramics), history of plumbing and other products such as bath units and, in a different gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum houses a bathroom with a washbasin and other toilet innovations.
Before the formation of Toto members of the group did session work for various musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all played on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also performed on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
You would expect a group with a name like Asia to be a prog rock group, but it is actually a pretty straightforward rock group. The group began as a group and released two albums - 1979's self-titled debut album and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The band has a varied musical background, but their biggest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a huge blockbuster, but it was not without its problems. The record companies put the band under pressure to release a hit single or else they would pull the album. Luckily for Toto they delivered, with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery owes a lot to their prior experience in the music industry, as the band members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts before starting the group. Their sonic trademark has become the standard for the '80s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.
The album opens with a strong and pounding sound, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly get their hooks into you. The album also has some slower, more jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song which combines folk and distorted AOR and sounds like a complete flop, but works wonderfully well.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes turned towards the negative. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band went through various drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band continued with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. However, the band was able to release a chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album featuring a new singer, Simon Phillips.
