How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. audi convenience key is situated at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different connector pins, and they perform different functions but the most effective method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. When I crank the engine with no sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. But i am afraid i might have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know both the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of fuel injectors, etc. In audi keys replacement to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. They're cheap and easy to find, especially in the case of a Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your car. It is an important part of the transmission in your Audi since it sends information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the engine of the car is spinning. If this sensor fails, it will affect the performance of the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits an electrical signal through an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU uses this signal to regulate fuel and boost, and also timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should detect the resistance to be around 1000 ohms in these areas. This is the same across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 DU So, you may find some good ones in wrecking yards.
