The name of the group came from a Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.
In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back was a flop, but they rebound with their fourth album Isolation with two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made Toto a household name across the globe.
After a break of couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. The album is a departure from the ballads on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. This album was their first album to go platinum in North America.
During the recording process for the fifth album the group loses their manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to change their name and create a new album with the new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa during a recent tour. Toto's touring lineup includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
