The TV Writers Room Hierarchy

How the writers room is structured and what each level of the hierarchy does

The Structure

The television writers room hierarchy runs from the showrunner at the top through executive producers, co-executive producers, supervising producers, producers, co-producers, story editors, staff writers, and writers assistants at the bottom. Each level has specific responsibilities, specific compensation, and the specific career development function of preparing the writer for the next level.

What Each Level Does

The staff writer is the entry level: in the room, contributing to the story, learning the showrunner voice, and occasionally assigned the first draft of an episode. The story editor supervises the story and is given episode writing assignments more consistently. The producer and above are expected to carry more of the room leadership and more of the episode writing. The showrunner runs the room and is responsible for every script.

Screenplay.biz covers the writers room hierarchy because the career path through the television writing profession is the specific knowledge that aspiring television writers need and that the mythology of the writers room tends to obscure.
