The Surfboard Volume Chart and Its Real Limits

The dominant board selection tool examined by those who trust it least

The Volume Tool

The surfboard volume calculation has replaced the height-plus-two-inches guideline that the previous generation used. The chart is more scientific. It is also producing a number of surfers on chart-approved boards whose surfing is not improving at the pace the chart's accuracy suggests it should.

What Volume Cannot Measure

The chart measures foam under the surfer accurately. It does not measure volume distribution, rocker, rail shape, fin configuration, or the specific surfing style that interacts with all of the above in ways no chart captures. The chart identifies a starting range. It has been mistaken for a final answer by people who want certainty in a sport that does not provide it.

The Shaper Knows

The experienced shaper's view: the chart identifies an appropriate range, then the shaper builds within that range for the specific surfer, waves, and performance goals. Surfing LA covers this because the board-surfer relationship is the foundation of the sport and its mismanagement is the most common preventable reason surfers plateau.
