What the paid newsletter model has produced for working journalists

The Model

The Substack economy allows journalists to publish directly to paying subscribers without institutional intermediaries. The model has been celebrated as liberating and criticized as winnowing: only journalists with pre-existing audience relationships can convert to paid newsletters at sustainable subscription levels.

The Numbers

Approximately 5 percent of active Substacks account for approximately 80 percent of total paid subscription revenue. The median Substack generates well below a living wage for its author. The successful Substacks are operated by journalists who built their audiences at institutional publications and are converting that institutional-built audience to direct subscription.
