Sophie, Countess of Wessex, the wife of Prince Edward, and once known as a “black sheep” of the family, became so close to Queen Elizabeth II that she was among the small group of family members summoned to the monarch’s bedside when she died on Thursday, according to the Times of London.
Sophie Rhys Jones, 57, became the first middle class working woman to join the royal family when she married Edward in 1999. Her mother was a secretary and her father was an executive in a tire company. Sophie had been working for Capital Radio when she met Prince Edward in 1987. She went on to join a PR firm where she ran campaigns for children’s books.
Her working life was brought to an embarrassing end in 2001 when she was duped by a News of the World reporter posing as a potential client for her PR firm. She was caught on tape offering comments about then prime minister Tony Blair and his wife Cherie, whom she described as “horrid, absolutely horrid.”
Although she struggled with royal duties at first, Sophie was helped by the Queen and learned to “manage expectations,” she told the newspaper.
After the death of he Queen’s husband last year, the monarch appointed Sophie colonel-in-chief of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, one of Prince Philip’s military roles.
When pandemic restrictions were partially lifted, Sophie and the Queen bonded on daily walks through Windsor Great Park, and over their shared love of military history, spending hours together poring over ancient documents in the Royal Archives, according to the Times.
Sophie’s two children were also close to the Queen. Her eldest, Lady Louise Windsor, now 18, learned to drive carriages on the estate with Prince Philip and paid tribute to him earlier this year at the Royal Windsor Horse Show’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations by driving his carriage in front of the Queen.

T o be viewed or not to be viewed is a series of works based around the notions of the phenomenology of perception. I have presented a small selection of works from the series below. The installation is intended so there are multiple possible viewer experiences of the work, through a combination of elements of chance. Including timing of the wind, the movement of the panels, duration of the moving image, and location of the viewer.
Play all angles of a scene at once to compare different viewpoints or view one at a time for a multi sensory (online) experience as you would if you were physically within the installation space. Each video captures the same moving image from a different point throughout the space, changing the viewers understanding of what they are seeing/experiencing.

Prince George was comforted by his great-aunt Sophie, Countess of Wessex, during Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in London on Monday.
As the 9-year-old left Westminster Abbey alongside his sister, Princess Charlotte, and their mother, Kate Middleton, Sophie rested an arm over the young prince’s shoulder.
Prince Edward’s wife, 57, wore a black dress and matching fascinator for the touching moment, while her great-nephew sported a navy blue suit and a black tie.
George and Charlotte, 7, arrived at the church with Middleton, 40, and Queen Consort Camilla.
Their dad, Prince William, came separately as he joined King Charles III, Prince Harry and more family members in a procession from Westminster Hall behind Her Majesty’s casket.
The little ones took their own places behind the coffin once the procession made its way inside the church, walking in front of Harry, 38, and Meghan Markle.
Prince Louis, who made headlines in June for his Platinum Jubilee antics , stayed at home due to his young age.

William is now next in line to the throne as Charles, 73, assumed Elizabeth’s role after her death at the age of 96 on Sept. 8, followed by George.
Charlotte and Louis come next. As for Harry, the former military pilot’s place is behind theirs despite him and Meghan Markle quitting their royal roles in 2020.
The couple’s children, Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 1, are sixth and seventh in line, respectively.
