This story (of course, adaptation of the same novel) was first made into a French movie Histoire d'O in 1975 featuring Corinne Clery a O.
A tawdry, sanitized effort that doesn't come close to the meaning of Reage's book.
When the Just Jaeckin film version of Story of O came out in 1975, many reviewers criticized Corrine Cléry for being a wimpy O. And they were right, she was. But now there's Story of O: Untold Pleasures. You want a wimpy O? Let me introduce you to Danielle Ciardi. This version of the classic story of sexual submission pulls its punches so often you wonder why it was even made. Let's get clear right off the bat that there is a lot of nudity in the movie: pretty, naked women all over the place, no disappointments there. The Award of Merit in this regard goes to Ciardi's backside. You just don't see 'em like that very often. The problem is with the film's conception of O. She is supposed to give herself completely to Rene and then Sir Stephen to do with her as they please. That's the whole sexual fantasy the story speaks to. Except in Danielle's portrayal, she gets deep into submission when she is at the château, but as soon as she goes home, it's "OK, whatever." She keeps going back and forth between, "I'm yours. Take me," and, "Are you kidding? Why would I want to do that?" O has to buy into the fantasy, the commitment to subservience, for the viewer to buy into it as well. Ciardi never gets us to that point. One begins to wonder why Sir Stephen, played by the talented Neil Dickson, after all her vacillating even wants to give her the time of day. As for the château, in the Jaeckin version, when O doesn't obey, she gets her ass whipped, hard, from here to sunrise. She even gets her ass whipped for no reason at all, which is actually the best reason there is. In this version, O objects and they say, "Oh, OK." Good grief. Oh, yeah. The whipping in this move? Lame beyond belief. O (and I guess we have to blame the director for her confused portrayal, not Ciardi) has the gravitas of someone who just doesn't get sex. There is no sense of lust, of craving, of submission, of yielding herself to the moment. She treats sex with as much heat as if she were stringing beads at summer camp, and with about that much maturity. The gap between her front teeth and her school-girl bob don't help much to create the look of a sexual creature, either. Again, there's lots of nudity, but none of it smolders. There's no fantasy world to get lost in, which this kind of story should provide to you. The only people who should see SoO: Untold Pleasures are completists who want to say they have seen all the film versions of the O story. A check mark on their list is the only thing they'll get out if this one. If you're looking for a turn-on, this movie ain't it.

Story of O (French: Histoire d'O , IPA: [istwaʁ do] ) is a 1975 erotic drama film directed by Just Jaeckin from a screenplay by Sébastien Japrisot , based on the 1954 novel of the same name by Pauline Réage . [1] It stars Corinne Cléry and Udo Kier .

A sequel titled Story of O: Chapter 2 was released in 1984.

A young woman fashion photographer, known only as O, is taken by her lover René to Château Roissy, where she is subject to various sexual and sadomasochistic acts as part of her training to serve the members of the club. O is taught to be constantly available for oral, vaginal, and anal intercourse. She is regularly stripped, blindfolded, chained and whipped . She leaves Roissy wearing an iron ring as a sign of her initiation and indicator to men in the society that she is a sex slave.

O meets a vain model named Jacqueline, whom she photographs and grows enamored with. René introduces O to his much older step-brother, Sir Stephen, and the two men share O, as René wishes O to learn to obey and serve someone whom she does not love. While Sir Stephen proves to be a more severe and strict master than René, O soon believes he is in love with her.

At Sir Stephen's direction, O is sent to an all-female country house in Samois, run by a woman named Anne-Marie, where she undergoes further beatings and training in submission. O's visit concludes with having rings pierced into her labia at the request of Sir Stephen, and receiving a brand with his initials.

Sir Stephen tells O that René is in love with Jacqueline, and that O must seduce her and get her to undergo training at Roissy. While at first resistant to getting Jacqueline to go to Roissy, O eventually agrees. Jacqueline moves into O's flat, and is seduced by her. O reveals her BDSM lifestyle and describes her stay at Roissy to Jacqueline, who is initially repulsed and disbelieving.

Sir Stephen shares O with two other men of his acquaintance, one simply known as "the commander" and the other a young man named Ivan. After one sexual encounter with O, Ivan believes himself to be in love with her and requests Sir Stephen release her. However O refuses to leave Sir Stephen.

O takes Jacqueline to Roissy where she will be trained to serve René. Later Sir Stephen and O visit the commander's home in Brittany for a party, where O is treated as a visual spectacle, wearing nothing but chains and an owl mask. Watching O at the party, Sir Stephen feels that his ownership of her is complete.

Some time after that, O asks Sir Stephen if he would endure the same punishments and experiences that she has undergone to show her unconditional love for him. When he says "I suppose so", she suddenly burns his hand with a hot cigarette holder, leaving there a circle, or an O.

Story of O was the first in a series of sex-oriented films for Anthony Steel, although he was always clothed. [2]

The film was refused a UK theatrical release certificate from the BBFC in 1975, [1] [3] but was eventually passed without cuts for DVD in 2000.

On Rotten Tomatoes , the film holds an approval rating of 33% based on nine reviews, with an average rating of 4.9 out of 10. [4]

Despite the label of "TV Series", I have never seen proof of this one ever being shown on television; more likely, it's a ten-part straight-to-VHS/later five-part DVD feature. Any which way, this is another version of Pauline Reage's erotic BDSM-themed literary classic, as previously seen in Just Jaeckin's hugely successful 1975 adaptation (starring Corinne Clery). One of the producers of that film, Éric Rochat, also directed a 1984 sequel of sorts, which has little to do with the original. It is again Rochat (under the alias of Ron Williams), who directed this (circa) 1992 version. Exact details of origin seems to differ, but it's shot in Brazil in the early 90s, where Rochat had previously made The Fifth Monkey/O Quinto Macaco for Menahem Golan, an entirely different story, starring Ben Kingsley. This version is quite an ambitious curiosity, as Rochat, a self-confessed O-fanatic, sets off to deal with the entire novel as closely as it is possible. However, as the film is soft-core, quite a bit has to be implied rather than shown (solved, sometimes, through strategically placed objects in front of the "naughty bits"). The entire cast is put together from local Brazilian talent (many from the "telenovela" world, it seems). Many of them are required to spend most/all of their on-screen time in advanced stages of undress and/or compromising situations. While the film/series never has been available in Brazil, it has enjoyed and still is enjoying healthy sales in many parts of the world. For example, it is still a best-seller in German-speaking territories. The actors are doing a decent job, despite everyone being rather woodenly dubbed, and Claudia Cepeda is good in the lead. The film is clearly low-budget and the cinematography is a bit flat, but significant attention has been given to location, sets and costumes. Sometimes it goes a bit over the top, but one can live with it. My favorite part is the episode at Anne-Marie's all-female estate Samois, where Rochat presents a hedonistic haven of submissive elegance. Jacqueline Sperandio plays Anne-Marie with a touch of Charlotte Rampling (who indeed was considered for the '75 version).Very intriguing. The women are all attractive without necessarily looking like your standard model type; here they come in different shapes and colors. A bit distracting is the fact that many of them have very obvious tan-lines, something that does not go well at all in an environment where no one ever wears swim- or underwear. Nevertheless, The Story of O is a rare oasis of refined sado-erotica in its field. No dungeon setting, no campy dominatrix in leather boots and no one crawling around on all fours, as is all but the rule these days.
