The Still Life Is Complete; The Dining Room Has It

The still life for the Salt Lake City dining room is complete and has been collected. The family collected the painting on Saturday and placed it in the dining room by Sunday, sending photographs that show it in the room for which it was painted: the north-facing wall, the dining table in the foreground, the specific afternoon light that the north-facing window provides. The painting works in the room. This is the statement that a completed commission either supports or does not, and Saturday's photographs support it. The romanesco cauliflower that I used as the compositional centrepiece of the experimental section I described earlier in this column's account of the commission is visible in the photographs.
