You don’t watch this for an intense slasher or a gory, campy 80s horror. You watch these to see the unfettered mania in Terry O’Quinn’s eyes as he plays a murderous yet loving family man with delusions of grandeur. Casually cleaning himself up as if a post-murder shower and shave was as routine as brushing his teeth, Jerry (Terry O'Quinn; Amityville: A New Generation, Pin, Black Widow, Silver Bullet) washes his blood-splattered body, gives himself a clean-cut makeover, and calmly dresses himself in the outfit he had neatly prepared. Beginning the scene looking shaggy, bearded and as rugged as James Brolin (The Amityville Horror), he parts ways with the house of his freshly slaughtered family looking more like a high school principal. He tidies up a bit on his way out, and the house is comically ransacked with blood, bodies and debris as if Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses (2003) literally just happened there. Were it not for the nudity or the brief but graphic macabre opening scene, I’d assume this could have had a PG-13 rating. Now recently remarried, Jerry has moved in with Susan (Shelley Hack; Troll) and her daughter Stephanie (Jill Schoelen; The Phantom of the Opera, Curse II, Popcorn) to bless them with all the love he has to offer… in his own twisted way. Jerry vents in the basement, and this time is precious for us viewers. O’Quinn really lets loose in these scenes. When Jerry is caught throwing a tantrum by Stephanie, he channels the dripping sinister allure of Frank from Hellraiser (1987); an obvious malevolence that desires obedient acceptance. But deep down, Jerry just has an extremely unhealthy obsession with being loved and being part of a perfect family… and he’ll do whatever it takes to have it. Yet, as it turns out, it seems he’s happy to fold his hand and start over as soon as things get a little rough. Naturally, he then has some loose ends to tie up—like the lives of his wife and stepdaughter! Look, this movie is really nothing special. But it’s entertaining enough, even if not ideally paced. Not much happens directly on screen, but the blood, tension and aggression run enough. Plus O’Quinn does an amazing job as a crazed “loving” family man. For me, this was probably my earliest exposure to a family-hopping evil stepfather movie. And for that, I’ll never forget it. Director Joseph Ruben (Dreamscape, The Good Son, Sleeping with the Enemy) served his viewers well and continued his career with quality domestic thrillers that should be seen.

This is the original Stepfather, with script by Donald E. Westlake. Our villain is a man who wants a perfect family. So he finds a recent widow or divorcee with a child and moves in on them to form one. But it never works out. He wants perfection and all he gets are human beings. So he kills them and then ... moves on. Neither this film nor the sequels explain how he finances all this, BTW. I mean, he sets up a new life while enduring the old one for a few months so he can move fully into his new identity. How he manages that (monetarily speaking) is not entirely clear. But the suspense is there and the violence is there and, after all, that is what this type of movie is about.

SHOUT! Factory's DVDs and BluRays are sensational. I can't say it any more plainly than that. The picture on "The Stepfather" appears a bit dirty and unpolished, the sound a bit under-produced. Yet even in this state I find the movie a collector's item. Before there was Hannibal Lecter and the American Psycho (and after Henry), there was the stepfather, a perfect role for the breakout actor Terry O'Quinn, who does steal the show here--he is genuinely terrifying here. As a film, "The Stepfather" isn't perfect--but it's one of the best of its type, certainly more chilling than gross out, which is saying something. It probably doesn't fit under the label "horror" very neatly, but it is subtly disturbing and memorable. The Shout! DVD also includes a neat making of featurette, which shows author Brian Garfield's thoughts, among other ideas from the filmmakers. It's a keeper bonus feature. Since we are so inundated these days with slasher movies and gross out effects, to say that "The Stepfather" is essential is superfluous. But as a suspense movie, it's quite thrilling--if not terribly surprising. The film does, however, have good economic sense, a belief that smaller is okay after all, the intelligence to make more out of less, and it features fine performances and a good script. Director Ruben should have continued making abnormal psychology studies such as this rather than turning his hand to cheap exploitation shockers that inspire bad thoughts and behavior (such as the very regrettable "The Good Son"). "The Stepfather" is violent to watch, but you know who the bad guy is, and you know to be afraid of him. B+

I the ending, he is stabbed in the heart, with a big knife. Anyone would assume he died. But, he comes back, in Stepfather 2. And he's committed to an insane asylum, not prison. I have seen this one, years ago, but can't remember when. And then just now. I glimpsed through StepFather 2 and 3. I intend to watch them through and through. I watched the remake of Stepfather, on Lifetime, a few years back, and then on my Amazon Prime, more recently. I'm figuring, that the producers didn't have plans for producing Stepfather 2, at the time of production of SF. That's why they let him die in the end; or so it appeared, anyway. I like this movie. More or less than the remake? I can not say. I sneak peek at the beginning and the end of 2 and 3. So I can't comment on them, one way or the other, yet

First off...I am an avid,,,and extremely critical... suspense/thriller movie buff who revels in being viscerally scared out-of-his wits...without the director using buckets of blood or idiotic/sophmoric situations to accomplish this feat. The Stepfather (fiendishly and poignantly portrayed by Terry O'Quinn) will send your nerves a-jangle. The plot here is simplistic...a very, very disturbed man is in search of the perfect family (ala ) The Brady Bunch or Father Knows Best...the problem is...is TRY telling Jerry that life isn't a idealistic cornball sitcom...see what the results are... Brilliantly directed by Joseph Rubens (Sleeping with the Enemy/The Good Son)... the Stepfather will take you on a haunting psychological rollercoaster ride filled with jumps, jolts, heart thumping and unconscious nail biting. The opening sequence...devoid of any dialogue and visually unnerving ...was so disturbing to one of my friends...that he wanted to take a 'raincheck' on watching the rest! Shelley Hack ...and especially Jill Schoelen...as the respective newly found wife and daughter...turn in engaging performances. Not to mention Hans Zimmer's creep-o-rama score...filled with violinists and cellists on mesculine and caffeine... If your genre is suspense...good suspense...if you liked Brian DePalma's Dressed to Kill & Body Double...if you liked Hitchcock's Psycho & The Birds...if you enjoyed Robert Harmon's The Hitcher or Curtis Hanson's The Hand that Rocks the Cradle...not to mention Carpenter's Halloween...then sit back and enjoy...! Oh...by the way...do you really want to know what happens to the family's puppy...or what happens when daddy goes down to the cellar to retrieve some ice cream...or what your stepfather's reaction may be when he matter-of-factly retrieves your mail...or what a simple phone receiver can also be used for...and...just out of curiosity... do you have to hide the cutlery in your house? Do you, pumpkin?

I'd heard of this movie before and had seen the remake, but it was only recently that I gave the original a shot. Seeing Terry O'Quinn of Lost fame as the star was what initially sold me on trying it, but the movie as a whole is about as perfect of a classic slasher as they come. The soundtrack is a little jarring if you're not ready for it, but you can tell the composer was definitely passionate about making appropriate music for every scene and it can range from hilarious to incredibly out of place, to absolutely perfect. O'Quinn hits his character's every note stunningly and can nail that rapid shift between perfect, 50's era television husband and broken sociopath without missing a beat. His facial expressions and range of vocal tones are just perfect for the character. The other actors all perform admirably, though I feel terrible for Mr. Olgilvie and the 'ending' his character was given after we spend so much of the movie following his story. That would probably be my only complaint about the film. If you've never watched and you love slasher films, classic thrillers, or Lifetime movies, there's no good reason not to watch this.

I can't recommend this movie enough. Terry O'Quinn's performance should rank amongst the best of all time in film. O'Quinn takes this role in what would be a good movie and takes it to another level. He makes it a masterpiece of any genre. The Stepfather's only shortcomings are not doing more with the Jerry Blake character. He is so brilliant that you don't want the movie to end and it leaves you with a strong desire to see more of a backstory. The film does a good job of explaining what's going on which sets up its scenes effectively. However, it would've been awesome to see more of O'Quinn, instead of the plot just being set up by references. Shout Factory does a solid job with the blu ray release. However, it does not appear to be remastered. It is pricey, but I felt it was a must for my collection. It also includes an interesting documentary on the making of the film. All in all, I'd recommend this to anyone older than 16. The foul language is minimal. The violence is gruesome in spots, but not over the top, and it feels like just enough to effectively execute certain scenes. There is a very brief sex scene containing no nudity that I feel would be teen safe. However, there is a later scene of nudity that I definitely would not want my children or teen to see.
