This was a decent documentary but could have been so much better. This is rated R so no penis shots or closeups of vaginas. The interviews were conducted on-set with each actor chatting about various things. I'd have preferred it if they'd been intervied in a different setting like you'd see on biography-type shows instead of outdoors and indoors while they're killing time between scenes. Only a couple people talked briefly about how they got into the business and that was disappointing to me. I wanted to know what lead each and every one of them to this line of work but learned nothing about it, really. I didn't care for Brittany Andrews and found her to be a bit arrogant and foul-mouthed, like some would expect someone in her line of work to act and speak. She said male actors who have trouble maintaining an erection are 'losers' and said she felt bad for the men who had to have sex with 'ugly girls'. She seems to think she's hot stuff but I don't find her face, or attitude, to be attractive at all. She said that 'fluffers' don't exist in the porn industry, you know, girls who try to keep the guys erect between takes. Total myth. Something interesting that I'd not heard of is something called a FIP, which stands for fake internal pump. So some of the 'money shots' are faked....I guess. No one said that exactly but it lead me to believe that's what they were talking about. I can't find any info on it so if you know more about it let me know! Asia Carrera said that some of the small-breasted women who do stripping too don't earn as much as the large-breasted women and that's why some end up getting breast implants. So I guess you gotta spend money to make money! Asia doesn't strip, I think she said she's too 'chicken' for that (go figure!) but got implants anyway....and talked about how nice they were. They do look pretty natural because they hang like real ones and aren't round and melon-like like most implants are. Jilly Kelly was massaging one of hers. Nina Hartley jokingly put her hand on some man's crotch and said that some would consider that to be rude but she thought the opposite! She was a nurses before she got into porn but unfortunately she never mentioned it. There's a filmography for each of the actors in the bonus features and a short 2-6 minute interview with the director and producer that wasn't that good. Overall, this was alright but not as good as I'd hoped. The discription from the DVD makes it sound a bit more interesting that it is.
3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting...probably could use better editing

As other reviewers have stated, this is a documentary and not actual pornography. It's not even a documentary masquerading as pornography. You will see some nudity but it's all pretty incidental. What I like about it is that it does actually provide glimpses into these people's lives--how they think, why they do what they do, what motivates them, even to some degree what their interests are aside from having sex. Some of them are very smart and wickedly funny. Some will have you scratching your head as to why they do this when it would seem that they could have better lives doing something else. The one hangup that I have about it is that it runs a bit long (I actually fell asleep in the middle of it) and there aren't any real viewer cues when subject matters are changing. It's sort of like one giant dialog spliced together from many different sources. Worth a look if you're interested in this field, though.

i found this documentary about the adult film industry very eye opening and revealing.i was very surprised by some of the stuff the talked about.there are some revelations about the industry and some myths that appear to be debunked by actual people in the industry, the people behind the scenes and the on screen talent.interesting, the actual on screen talent are referred to(by themselves and others in the industry)as performers, and not actors/actresses/which,to me says a lot about how they view themselves.in watching this film,it's obvious the adult film industry has evolved over the last fifteen years, and will likely continue to evolve.for me,The Secret Lives of Adult Stars is a 4/5

This gets a five-star rating from me. This documentary touches on the variety of reasons why some people have chosen this type of paying occupation. I found it refreshing to hear reasons for opting in from the performers, directors and producers themselves.Their reasons are many and varied and for that they should be praised not ridiculed. I recommend this DVD to anyone that would like to know why they do what they do, how they chose their occupation and the measures they take to protect themselves from harm.

OK Movie, would have been better if Nina Hartley would get out of the picture business. She needs to direct and stay out of the picture and the action.

I bought this dvd to see how porn stars really are off the set. I was surprised at some of the things that the women and men have to go through and do just to be in the industry. This dvd explains a lot about how to be in the industry, the marketing it takes, what you should be doing with your money, std testing and, so much more.

This movie is excellent movie enjoy but you need a strong stomic to watch so be a wear of the movie it is very sexuality not for kids at all do not bring kids only adults you need a good head to focus enjoy no girl friend recommended enjoy if girls watch it remember its only a movie not real life .

I was not impressed at all. The documentary is amateurish, very commercial and too narrowly focused. After purchasing it, I immediately resold it at the CD/DVD exchange store. Do not recommend!!!

This documentary bombards you with so many opinions and facts that it takes effort to digest all of the information. You learn a lot about this industry that is usually secretive. They interview male and female stars, however, like much heteropatriarchal works, this shows lots of female nudity and no male nudity. This is true despite interviewees saying the business is trying to attract more (straight?) female viewers. Unlike many documentaries, this one included optional Spanish subtitles. For those who want to know about this business, this is a must-see. It may also be good to see along with reading Jill Nelson's anthology "Whores and Other Feminists." The topic of erotic labor is finally getting the serious attention that it merits. One Eurasian actress is interviewed, but this film shows no Black or Latino porn actors or actresses. It was very Eurocentric and doesn't discuss white privilege and the abundance of blonde actresses in this arena.
