The Screenplay Contest Ecosystem

What screenplay competitions are worth entering and what winning produces

The Landscape

The screenplay contest ecosystem encompasses several dozen competitions of varying prestige, prize value, and actual industry impact. The major competitions -- the Academy Nicholl Fellowship, the Austin Film Festival competition, the BlueCat Screenplay Competition, and the PAGE Awards -- have produced documented career outcomes for their finalists and winners. The majority of contests have not.

What Winning Produces

What winning a major screenplay competition produces: industry attention in the form of read requests from managers, agents, and development executives who track the competition results; the specific credential of the competition win that makes query letters more likely to receive responses; and the contest feedback that can improve the script before it reaches industry readers. The win is a door opener. The script behind the door still has to be good.

Screenplay.biz Coverage

Screenplay.biz covers the contest ecosystem because the aspiring screenwriter investing time and entry fees in competitions deserves the honest account of which competitions produce the outcomes they are designed for and which produce primarily contest revenue for the organizers.
