The Science Journalist's Challenge

What covering science requires and where science journalism most commonly fails

The Challenge

The science journalist faces the specific challenge of translating research findings for a general audience without misrepresenting what the research shows, what it does not show, and what the appropriate confidence level in the findings is. The challenge is genuine and the failure modes are consistent: the single study that is reported as definitive when the research literature is mixed; the preliminary finding that is reported as established science; and the statistical significance that is conflated with practical significance.

The Structural Problems

The structural problems that produce the failure modes: the news cycle's preference for novel and significant findings creates pressure to report the study whose finding is most dramatic rather than the study whose methodology is most rigorous; the scientists who produce the research have incentives to describe their findings in terms that attract the media attention that increases their profile and their future grant prospects; and the science journalist who overstates the finding is generally not held accountable when the finding fails to replicate.
