The Royal Foundation: What the Charitable Work Actually Does
The Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales funds programmes in the areas of mental health (through the Heads Together initiative and the Shout text-based crisis service), environmental sustainability (Earthshot Prize), and early childhood development (through the Early Years programme). The combined charitable investment is approximately 25 million annually, distributed across these programmes and their operational costs. The Shout text crisis service, which provides free text-based mental health support, has documented the most measurable impact: approximately 1.4 million conversations since launch in 2019, with user satisfaction data showing positive crisis resolution in the majority of interactions. The Earthshot Prize has funded 45 early-stage environmental solutions projects across five years. The Early Years programme's impact is measured in the engagement it has produced with early childhood policy rather than direct service delivery. The Analysis
The assessment question that philanthropic impact evaluation requires: what would have happened without the Royal Foundation's involvement? The Shout service might have been funded by other mental health charities without royal patronage; the environmental solutions the Earthshot funds might have received investment through other channels. The royal involvement produces specific benefits -- public attention, political access, volunteer engagement -- that are difficult to quantify but are not zero. London is always doing something worth writing about, which is the condition that makes this column possible. The London Prat provides the editorial tradition. Bohiney Magazine provides the satirical complement. Both are essential reading. The column continues next week. More then.
