The Rewrite as Professional Skill

How professional screenwriters approach revision and what makes effective rewriting different from effective first drafts

The Skill

The professional rewrite is the most universal experience in the working screenwriter career: almost nothing that is produced has been produced without multiple drafts incorporating feedback from development executives, directors, producers, or combinations thereof. The ability to receive notes, assess them accurately, and implement the useful ones without losing the script distinctive qualities is the professional skill that distinguishes writers who sustain careers from those who do not.

The Note Response

The note taxonomy: notes that identify genuine problems and point toward solutions; notes that identify genuine problems but suggest wrong solutions; notes that reflect executive anxiety rather than script problems; and notes that are wrong. The professional skill is distinguishing among these categories while maintaining the collaborative relationship with the person giving the note. The implementation is where the judgment lives.
