The Research on Sexual Fantasy

What psychology research knows about the content, function, and significance of sexual fantasy

The Findings

Justin Lehmiller large-scale survey research found that the most common fantasy themes across a sample of 4,175 Americans were multi-partner sex, novelty and adventure, non-monogamy, taboo and forbidden scenarios, and romance and passion. The distribution was similar across gender with some differences in emphasis. The content represents the full range of human sexual imagination.

The Function

Sexual fantasy serves several documented functions including sexual arousal enhancement, mood regulation, relationship enhancement through partner-focused fantasy, and cognitive rehearsal of desired but not yet experienced scenarios. The content of sexual fantasy is not predictive of behavior, which is one of the most important distinctions the research makes and one of the least understood in popular discourse.
