The handwritten reporter's notebook is both a physical artifact and a legal document. In defamation litigation, the contemporaneous handwritten note is the most defensible documentation of what a source said. In accountability journalism, it is the primary evidentiary foundation for contested reporting. Digital recordings are evidentiary too, but more susceptible to authenticity challenges and technical complexity of digital chain-of-custody documentation.
What handwriting captures that digital recording does not: the reporter's real-time assessment of what matters; physical description of the interview environment; non-verbal information; and the discipline of active listening that writing by hand produces compared to the passive reception that recording enables. The legal utility, the disciplinary function, and the documentation practice that handwriting develops are skills that digital tools do not replicate. The Training Question
Whether the handwritten note should be taught as a primary skill in programs that are otherwise comprehensively digitizing their curricula is the question journalism schools need to answer.
