The Reason Why You're Not Succeeding At Replacement Window Handle
Choosing uPVC Replacement Window Handles
Window handles are an integral part of uPVC frames and must be matched to the frame. The spindle size is what determines if your new uPVC handles will fit.
Check out the table below for a quick checklist when measuring your uPVC window handle's spindle length. This will help you choose the right replacement window handle for your double-glazed window.
Espag Handle
Espag handles are the most commonly used style of handle found on upvc windows (they're often found in aluminium and wood too). They feature a square spindle which extends from the back of the handle, and is inserted into the multi-point lock mechanism attached to the window. By turning the handle you control the mechanism that locks and unlocks the locking points around the window.
Window handles made of Espag are available in a variety of styles and functions. Some feature a push button for a locked closed position and key-locking. (And nonlocking against fire if required.) A majority of them meet the Secure by design specification for an additional level of security. They are also available with different sizes of spindles that can be modified by using spindle sleeves to reduce the size of protruding spindles.
The espagnolette handles we offer have been tested by Yale to ensure they are up to the standards you'd expect from such a brand and are suitable for upvc, timber and aluminum windows. We have a variety of colours available along with the option of matching the handle to the hinges you already have.
Another important aspect of handles made from espagnolette is their step height. This is the distance between the base of the handle and the point where it rests on the frame. It's important to measure this correctly to ensure a tight and secure fit. Fortunately, the majority of our handles comply with industry standards of 43mm between the screw hole centres.
As with other types of handles you have the choice between straight and Cranked designs. Cranked handles are great for situations where the espagnolette handles will be located close to the frame's edge as they can give you more clearance for opening the window.
Our range of replacement handles made from upvc offers a wide range of styles, finishes and colours to suit your home's decor, such as polished chrome, satin nickel and antique brass. Some of our handles feature a soft-close mechanism to minimize the sound of your windows closing.
Cockspur Handle
The Cockspur Window Handle was designed for manufacturers who wish to offer their customers an elegant and high-quality design. These handles can be used with uPVC windows or aluminium frames. They function by using an edge that is locked over the frame edge to secure the window. The window handle can be locked to ensure that it opens only when pushed, giving you additional security. The handle is available in five different finishes, both left and right handed. This lets fabricators provide more windows.
These cockspur window handles are provided with 3 packing pieces with different thickness, which allows them to be adjusted to accommodate a wide range of backset sizes. Each packer fits neatly under the handle's nose and can be removed or incorporated into the size of the step in order to achieve a different backset, ranging from 9mm to 21mm. The handle is available in right and left handed versions with straight or curved noses.
It is important to measure the height of your current handle prior to buying a new handle to make sure it fits correctly. The wrong handle could lead to a variety of problems, including the inability of the window to be shut. This can be a nuisance for homeowners and could cause stress that is not needed.
A cockspur handle is a type of handle that is found on older uPVC and timber windows as well as some aluminum windows. These handles do not include any kind of window lock, in contrast to an Espag handle that is used on more modern windows that have shootbolts and an Espagnolette bar window lock.
The espagnolette handle (often called 'espag" or "espag") is the most commonly used handle found on new uPVC Casement Windows. The Yale Encloser locking mechanism is activated when you turn the handles on the espagnolette. This is much safer than traditional cockspur handles or British standard handle. This is because the espagnolette handle turns multiple locks to secure the window frame.
Handle with Tilt and Turn
These windows are popular with those who wish to increase the amount of airflow inside their home while also adding a level of security. Like the name suggests, they offer the ability to turn and tilt that allows the window to open up at 90 degrees, allowing a small opening or to fall down into a hopper-style design to allow for complete ventilation. The dual function gives them an attractive appearance that can greatly enhance the awe factor of your double glazed windows.
Tilt-and turn windows are more complicated than other double-glazed window styles, which increases the cost of installation. They require more components and require more labor. These windows are a worthwhile investment as they can add value and provide numerous benefits to your home.
One of the main benefits is that they permit you to clean windows from the inside without using ladders outside. This is ideal for people who live in high-rise flats or buildings as it eliminates the necessity to walk outside and the risk of falling from a height. Tilt-and turn windows provide additional security, as they are locked when they are they are in a tilted position. This means that intruders cannot open them from the inside.

These handles are typically found on European style windows in Germany and other European countries, but they can also be used in UK homes. The uPVC replacement handle is usually an a spindle-based handle and has 7mm square spindles which is usually found in lengths of 32mm, 38mm or 44mm. The base of the handle is also more wide than other handles, which is why they are known as a 'tilt safe' window handle since it can only be turned to open the window after it has been locked into either an open or tilt position.
If you want to replace a uPVC tilt and turn window handle you will need to first remove the handle that is currently in the window with an screwdriver. The screws are usually hidden behind a backplate that is sprung loaded. Simply lift the backplate and then twist it until you can see two screw holes. By using a ruler or tape measure you can measure the distance between the two screws which is usually 43mm centre to centre. Once you have the measurement, you can choose the correct size handle to match your uPVC windows.
Aluminium Handle
Made from durable diecast aluminium Finished in stylish look matt-black colour.
Typically, it is made of corrosion-resistant and weatherproof alloys, the aluminum handle is strong enough to meet the demands of the construction industry. Aluminium is also extremely durable, with a great strength-toweight ratio. It is able to endure even the most severe of conditions. Moreover, it is immune to the effects of ultraviolet radiation and is therefore safe to indoor use. It's also extremely versatile and can be colored to match any aesthetic. The possibilities are endless. From classic emulations, hardware metals to vibrant applications of hundreds of pure colors.
